“Thank you.”

“You can come see me if you want.” Something stirred inside me, the same fuckin’ thing that did anytime she was near.

“I might just do that.” She let out a hum and it sounded like music to my ears. “I should let you get back to work. I don’t want to bother you too much.”

“You’re not a bother.”

“You’re too sweet. I love you, Lee.”

“Love you too, baby. See you later.”

When I hung up, I found Joss staring in my now-open door, her eyes shining and a smile barely suppressed on her face.

“What’s going on?” I asked, setting my cell down and trying to act like I wasn’t head over fuckin’ heels for the girl I’d just talked to on my phone.

“You’re absolutely adorable,” she said, stepping into the room with a notepad and a pen in her hands. “Sorry to interrupt. I didn’t want to be late for our meeting.”

Our meeting.

I checked the time on my phone and realized I’d somehow lost half the day. Joss and I went over a dozen or more things I’d missed the last few days, then she updated me on Abrams and Maxwell. The two were currently being contracted to Harris Lockhart to help him transport some of his equipment across the country. And she gave me an update on Warren, who was working for his usual client, one of the first I’d brought on after restructuring the company last year.

“Cael will be here this afternoon when he gets his daughter home from her swimming lesson,” Joss said as we were wrapping up. “And Vinny should be here soon. Jen’s contractions are coming more frequently and she won’t listen to me.”

“Need me to tell her to leave?”

“Honestly?” Joss stood, a smile on her face. “It might help.”

“Consider it done.” I stood, following her out of my office and going straight to Jen’s. Except Vinny was already there, forcing her to shut down her computer and pack up.

The man turned to me and shook my hand, then leaned in close as he tugged at the sleeves of his shirt. “My friends aren’t having any luck,” he said, not bothering to look at me. “I was thinking of calling in Dad’s friends.”

This whole situation with the FBI had shook all of us, but it was hard to get used to Vinny trying to talk in code.

His friends—his hacker friends—were looking into who paid Donald Baker’s bond. His father’s friends were the mafia crew who’d come earlier this year. The hacker and the ex-cybercrimes cop.

“I think that might be a good idea. See if they can help.”

It was them who found the kid we’d been searching for. Should have been easy enough for them to find this out.

“Okay, I’m read—Oh!” Jen doubled over, hands on her belly. Immediately, Vinny and I reached to steady her.

“You alright?”

She didn’t bother looking at me, just nodded her head as she breathed deep breaths. Vinny rubbed her back and stared at me like I had any fuckin’ clue what to do.

“Need me to call an ambulance?”

“No!” Jen shook her head, then reached out and grabbed Vinny by the shirt. “But I think we need to go.”

They rushed out the minute her contraction was over, and I was left scratching my head as they pushed out the front door.

My accountant was going into labor, and all I could think of was Kelly’s stomach round with my child. I glanced down at my phone, hoping for another message, but I found none. The door swung open a second later. I glanced up, hoping yet again, but not finding what I wanted.

“Carina?”

“Hey, sugar.” She strutted my way before grabbing my arm and pulling me down so she could kiss my cheek. When she stepped back, she crossed her arms over her chest. “I hadn’t heard from you after the other night. How’s Kelly doing?”

“Good.” I rubbed the back of my neck, feeling my skin prickle with heat. “She’s good. Great.” The room was empty, and it was the only thing making this bearable. Being near my ex, talking to her about the woman I loved.
