He slid his hands into my hair, tugging it off my shoulders before dropping a kiss to my throat. “I counted two sips. It’s a bit shy of the three full cups you usually require to make you even slightly agreeable.”

“Hey. I resemble that.” A quiet moan left me as he kissed me again. “Maybe I found something better than coffee to wake me up.”

“Is that so?” Lee hooked a leg behind me, pulling me closer to him. My heart kicked and my fists clenched, loosening only when he smoothed his hands down my shoulders and arms and laced his fingers with mine. “Finish your coffee, little hellion.”

After taking a calming breath, I lifted onto my toes and pressed a quick kiss to his lips. “Fine, old man.”

“Old man?”

A smirk tugged at my lips. I grabbed my coffee and took a drink, then climbed into the chair beside him as I said, “What time did you wake up this morning? Only old people can wake up before the sun and actually function.”

“Then I must be old.” Deep laughter rumbled through the room. “Though that means I’ve been old most of my life.”

“What do you even do this early?”

He scrubbed a hand over his head, and for a moment, I got lost in the sight of his rippling muscles. “Work.”

“Work?”

He turned away, leaning his elbows on the counter and facing into the kitchen. “You want breakfast? I don’t have much, but I can cook something up.”

“Lee.” I stopped him from getting up with a hand on his arm. “What’s going on?”

“Nothin’ you need to worry about.”

When he tried to move, I stopped him again. “What’s going on, Lee?”

He ran his tongue across his front teeth, eyeing me like he didn’t think I could handle whatever he was going to say.

It made me wonder if I could.

“Someone posted bond for Donnie Baker. Asshole got out of jail late yesterday evening.”

A wave of dizziness hit me and I grabbed the counter to steady myself. The world felt like it was closing in on me, and when a pressure settled on my shoulders, my first instinct was to fight back.

Lee stopped my fist just inches from his face.

“Not gonna let anything happen to you, Kell. Promise.” He pulled me into his chest, and I wrapped my arms around his neck, clinging to him like my life depended on it. “He doesn’t know where you are. Doesn’t know who you are, far as I can tell.”

“Who would let him out?”

“Don’t know. Got Vinny and his friends looking for answers to that.”

Vinny.

After all this time, thinking of him, thinking of Jen, still hurt.

“Can you put him away again?”

Lee smoothed his hands over my back, then shook his head. “That FBI agent’s still hanging around. Thinks we were harassing him. That we did something we weren’t supposed to.”

“Did you?”

He shrugged. The motion felt like a hug as it squeezed my arms between his thick shoulders and neck. “Maybe.”

That word was a whisper against the side of my head, nothing more than a quiet breath. I edged back, catching his gaze before he could glance away.

But he didn’t glance away.
