She backed into me, not shying away when her body touched mine. Pressing against me, like she could protect me. Like she wasn’t fuckin’ scared like she’d always been. “Just let me talk to him, okay? I haven’t seen him in—”

Roscoe shook his head. “Nuh uh. This isn’t social hour. Get to work.”

“I just got off stage, I’m supposed to be done for the night.”

“You’re supposed to be working. You get your ass out there and serve our customers. You can talk to him after your shift.”

My gaze darted to the side, to the door Kelly’d had her back pressed against when I arrived. “I’ll pay for a dance.”

Roscoe narrowed his eyes. “One dance?”

I shook my head, pulling out my wallet. “The whole night.”

“Lee.” Kelly whipped around, and fuck if the look on her face didn’t make me want to pick her up and haul her out of here. Take her back to my apartment.

Take her to my bed.

Fuckin’ hell.

Wasn’t it enough that she was gorgeous when fully clothed?

Here she was, standing in front of me in nothing more than a fuckin’ teddy, one of her feather boas laced around her bare shoulders, and a damn tattoo of a snake I’d never seen before and didn’t want to stop staring at wrapping around her leg and hip like it was real.

Pulling out a wad of cash from my wallet, I held it up. “The whole fuckin’ night.”

Roscoe grabbed the wad from my hand, quickly counting it out before shoving it in his pocket.

“Hey!” Kelly lunged at him, stopped only when my hands gripped her smooth skin. I pulled her back into me. “Part of that’s mine!”

“You’ll get your cut when you’re done. Take your fucking knife out again and you get none.”

Swore, there was steam coming from her ears. I tugged her into the room at my side, closing the door on her little staring contest with Roscoe.

“Lee, what are you—” She didn’t finish. Not when I cupped her face with my palms, running my thumb across her bottom lip. Her mouth fell open. Her aqua eyes went dark. I wanted to lean in. To taste her. To take her mouth and hold her close until I melted into her. Until there was no separating us anymore because it hurt too much not having her in my life.

But I couldn’t.

Not with her history.

Not knowing what she’d gone through, and what I hadn’t been able to stop.

Kelly wrapped her hands around my wrists, pulling my thumb away from her lips. “What are you doing here, Lee?”

Why did her voice sound like an angel’s song? Why did her skin feel like the finest silk?

Why couldn’t I tell her the truth?

“Been looking for you,” I said instead.

“You found me.” She pulled away, dropping my hands and strutting across the room. Giving me a glimpse of every fuckin’ curve of the gorgeous body that’d been tormenting me for over a year.

She turned, leaned her back against the wall, one high heel pressed into the cheap wainscoting while she wrung her fingers around her boa near her waist.

I stepped toward her, needing to close the distance between us, only to be shot down when she raised her palm and told me, “Stop. Sit. Please.”

The only chair in the room was behind me, and it fuckin’ killed me to move away from her.

But I did.
