When I pinched her arm, she squeaked. “What’s that for?”

“Just checking if you’re real or a fantasy.”

She wiggled her rear again. “I’m quite sure I’m real. But there’s only one way to find out.” Then she laughed. “Actually, there are quite a few ways…”

My lion roared in glee, and my little — er, big — monk twitched against her hip.

“We might have to test them all,” I warned.

Her sultry laugh was music to my soul. “I’m in if you’re in, my good knight. I’m all in.”

Chapter Fifteen

MARIAN

Given all the danger and intrigue I knew the day would bring, it really wasn’t the kind of morning to lounge around.

But boy, did I lounge…and lounge…and lounge, with Tuck’s help, of course.

We lounged on the bed. We lounged against the wall. We lounged on the rug by the fireplace, just like I’d dreamed.

We were still there, limbs intertwined, faces close. Then Tuck started kissing his way down my collarbone toward my breast.

I chuckled, twirling a finger in his unkempt hair. “You, dear friar, were born for trouble.”

Undeterred, he continued his sensual mission.

“Hmm. Born for some other things too,” he murmured, kissing his way around a nipple.

I arched, biting back another cry.

“Besides,” he mumbled out of the side of his mouth. “You know what they say about trouble and trouble’s mate…”

I giggled, then pressed him back in place. The last thing I wanted was to distract him now.

Then a knock sounded on the door, and we froze.

Well, Tuck froze. I was so heated up by then, my temperature merely dropped to inferno level.

“Dammit…” Tuck muttered.

We both knew the outside world would demand our attention soon. But still…now?

Another knock.

Tuck sulked. “If it’s the devil coming to drag me to hell, he can wait.”

I nuzzled his face. “None of that now.”

We’d covered that topic several times. Theoretically, we might qualify for hell and damnation. Still, I had a hard time believing that. Two average peasants could fall in love and call it a common-law marriage. Why couldn’t we?

It was the monk part that was the catch. Oh, and the noble maiden thing. Also…unicorn. We were supposed to marry well, and a lion shifter/monk would never do, no matter how well he did me.

I hid a grin at that dirty joke. Obviously, Tuck was rubbing off on me.

“M’lady…” someone called from the other side of the door.

Tuck pulled the sheet over our heads. “Pretend we’re not here.”
