“Well, what kind of news do you bring?” King Francisco broke the silence.

The queen stared him down, like someone seeking the truth. He took a breath.

“I’m fairly certain that Your Majesties will be pleased with my news.”

Queen Evalyn let out a sigh of relief. Like the sucking doom cloud, hovering, was erased. “Please tell us.” She grinned.

“It turns out you both have a very sweet, polite, wonderful, and engaging six-year-old.”

“That’s wonderful!” The king boomed. He looked to the queen. She couldn’t stop beaming but finally was able to break her fixed view. She gazed back at her husband.

“How are Isabella and Quairken?” King Francisco asked.

“Splendid. They were concerned about why I hadn’t been down in a while. All in all, things seem well.”

“How does she look?” The queen clasped her hands together.

“Isabella?” Alzerion chuckled.

“No.” She slapped her leg. “Aironell, of course.”

“Well, she’s cute. Her hair has grown so much. She has bouncy curls.”

“Tell us more,” Queen Evalyn pleaded.

He pursed his lips. Alzerion scratched his head and then moved within touching distance. “If I may?” He reached his hands out. Neither stopped him so he continued. He placed a hand on each of their foreheads, just below their crowns. He closed his eyes.

The queen’s eyes watered. She saw her. Aironell. Her hair. Her soft rosy complexion. Her beautiful cerulean blue eyes. Then it was gone. Alzerion stepped back.

“Thank you.” King Francisco smiled. “That was much appreciated.”

“Oh, Francisco.” Queen Evalyn laid her head on his shoulder.

“I know.” He rubbed the side of her face. “She’ll be home again. Don’t forget that.”

She sniffled.

“Is it alright if I leave for a bit?” asked Alzerion.

"Where are you going?” The king asked.

“I’d like to walk through town.

“Of course, enjoy.”

Alzerion bowed and left.

A SURPRISE INSIGHT

T

hen with that statement, Alzerion walked down West Wing corridor and went out the front door. Then he proceeded down Matters Lane and looked back at the palace to make sure nobody was watching him. Next, he turned onto Abandon Alley and came to the house that started all the nonsense.

He knocked on the door and someone unexpected opened it. It was not Ulbrick, whom he disgusted, but rather a short woman in a simple pale blue dress with pudgy cheeks. She also had light brown hair. However, the woman’s hair was mousy, graying, and a mess most of the time. He was a bit surprised to see her. He never expected to find his mother here. Has she been watching out for him? Over the years, they rekindled that bond that was once cracked.

“Mother, is it really you?” asked Alzerion.

“Of course, it is,” answered Melinda. “I missed you.”
