I swung open the door, hoping it was someone who could calm her down, because I certainly couldn’t.

“Hey!” Cody said, taking me in with those fabulous blue eyes of his. “Is my sister…”

Just at that moment, Natalie shrieked.

“I tried to tell her you weren’t here, but she won’t listen.”

“It’s not me she’s looking for… it’s Bernard.”

“What? Bernard! What’s going on? Why would she be looking for Bernard in the middle of the night? Isn’t he home, sleeping or walking the floors in anticipation of his wedding? Please don’t tell me he hooked up with some woman at the bar.”

This night seemed to be spiraling completely out of control.

“Nope. He’s home, at least I think he’s home, but Nat thinks you and Bernard are having sex. That’s why she’s here. Our mom just called me and filled me in.”

The thought caused my stomach to twist. “How did she ever get that idea? He’s the groom!”

“Your dance.”

“I would never… it was just one dance… I left right after that.”

“So did Bernie,” he whispered.

“That had nothing to do with me.”

“Tell that to my sister,” he said, as Natalie came charging for us.

I stepped out of her way just as Cole grabbed her around the waist from behind, picked her up, and swung her away from the door, slamming it shut with his foot. The man was faster and stronger than I thought. “Natalie, let’s calm down. Bernard isn’t here.”

“He was never here,” I told her. “Never. Ever. Never.”

“You’re lying!” she yelled. “I know you, Emily Jennings, with that perfect body of yours. Look at you! You’re practically naked, and you still look like a fucking model.”

I felt suddenly self-conscious of my lack of a robe. I knew my top outlined every aspect of my breasts, and my shorts were really short, but I usually wasn’t interrupted in the middle of the night by a crazed soon-to-be bride and her adorable brother… a brother I’d wanted to have sex with, like tonight.

“Nat, she’s telling the truth,” Cody assured her, grinning my way. “I was here. I only left about a half hour ago. I’m sorry, but we couldn’t keep our hands off each other. Neither of us wanted to tell you, but there. It’s done. I’m sorry. We’re both sorry.”

I could see her calming down. Who knew that our having sex would actually act as a balm for her?

“You mean you two had sex after I asked you not to?”

“Yes,” I told her. “We couldn’t help it. It was something we had no control over. Wild, passionate, dirty… really dirty, dirty sex. I’m sorry. Can you ever forgive us? I was still recovering when you knocked on the door. He only left so we could both get some sleep, or we’d still be at it… like bunnies… dirty bunnies.”

Cody mouthed ‘dirty bunnies’ at me, doing his best to hold back his laughter.

Natalie glared at me, eyes totally puffy and bloodshot. All I could think about was how could we possibly fix that for the wedding… if there would even be a wedding.

“You promise?” she asked me.

“I promise,” I told her, knowing it was a total lie but trying my best for genuine sincerity. Not that I hadn’t imagined having dirty sex with Cody before I drifted off to sleep, so I figured that counted.

“Why didn’t you say so in the first place?” she asked, and I could tell the fight was waning.

“I tried to, but you wouldn’t listen.”

Cody eased his hold on her, and she wiped her fight away by rubbing her fingers under her eyes and running her hands through her tangled hair.

“I’m still mad at you… both of you, but not as mad. So, then why were you dancing with Bernard?” she asked. “He never dances with anyone… not even me. And where the fuck is he? He’s not answering his phone. I was going to drive over to our place, but I know better than to get behind the wheel when I’ve had more than one glass of wine.”
