“Thank God for that,” Cody said.

“Did you ever think that maybe he’s asleep?” I asked, gently touching her arm.

“But with who?” she asked.

“Why do you think he’s cheating on you?” Cody asked.

“Because he’s done it before,” she admitted, and I swear my breath caught in my throat. Bernard… Natalie’s Bernard was a cheater? I couldn’t believe that. For one thing, where would he get the time? They were attached at the hip.

Cody spun her around then, and she sobbed as he held her close. I could tell she’d had way too much to drink, and when she drank, she couldn’t remember much of how she behaved or what she’d said. I hoped that was still the case, and all this craziness would just fade away into the night.

“I’ll make some tea,” I mumbled, not knowing what else to say.

“I THINK SHE’S finally asleep,” I told Cody as I walked out of the other bedroom where he’d dropped Natalie after she started to doze on the sofa. “Good thing the wedding isn’t until two o’clock. No way could she ever have recovered for a morning wedding. This is going to take a massive group effort to get her looking like a happy bride by the designated time.”

I yawned then, a great big tearful yawn.

“I should go,” he said.

“What if she wakes up in an hour still looking for Bernard? I don’t think I can handle her.”

“What are you suggesting?”

“Maybe you should sleep here,” I offered, and as soon as I said it, he grinned and raised an eyebrow.

“What are you suggesting?” he repeated, his voice raspy and low this time.

“I’m not suggesting anything other than it would be nice if you were here when she woke up.” I wanted him to know I genuinely meant it.

“And where do you propose I sleep? This sofa isn’t nearly long enough.”

“You can sleep in my bed. I’ll take the sofa,” I told him.

“But what about all that dirty bunny sex?” he asked, walking over to me. “I hate lying to my sister.”

“Let’s save that for after the wedding,” I teased. Being around him, this late at night, in my cabin, was almost more than I could handle.

“Is that a promise?” he asked, stepping in even closer, causing my heart to race.

“It might be,” I said. “Depends on how good your band sounds at your sister’s wedding. I expect nothing short of a concert-level performance. And… how well you behave tonight.”

He stood only a breath away from me now. “Define behave.”

My heart beat in my throat. I hadn’t been this turned on without actually touching anyone in… well… ever.

“That you don’t try to lure me into your bed… I mean my bed.”

He gazed past me to my bedroom. “It’s a big bed.”

“Not big enough,” I said, as he leaned in.

My heart banged against my chest, my knees were ready to buckle and I knew if he touched me, it would be all over.

Problem was his big sister was in the other room, and I didn’t want another scene.

“We could sleep with pillows between us,” he offered. “You might be more comfortable than on the sofa.”

“Those pillows would have to be made of cement and be as high as the ceiling.”
