She gave me a devilish grin. ‘I don’t remember you minding my tenacity.’

‘Behave yourself, brat. I don’t want to pull this car over to give you an attitude adjustment.’

‘Don’t tempt me,’ she muttered under her breath.

Hours later, after she’d plugged her address into my navigation system, we pulled up to a smart building near the city centre.

‘So this is home?’ I asked as I turned the car off.

‘Yeah.’

‘Nice and close to the bars and stuff.’ My mouth felt like I’d eaten sand as I tried to converse to stop her from leaving. The drive had taken hours, but it still hadn’t been long enough. I wasn’t ready to let her go.

‘I guess. I’m not huge on partying. The flat is big and old, with high ceilings and huge windows. Plus, the concierge is a saint. It’s home. I bet you live in some fuck-off gigantic mansion.’

I laughed and shrugged. ‘I do.’

‘Just you?’

‘No, my brother Ewen lives with me, and the staff.’

‘Lucky. I wouldn’t mind someone having to do all my washing. I bet you don’t even know how to use a washing machine.’

She had me there.

‘Anyway... I should probably...’ Valentina tipped her head toward the front door and grabbed her bag from the floor.

‘Yeah, I guess you should.’

We sat for a few breaths, neither ready for it to be over. Then the door clicked as she opened it and got out.

‘I’ll see you at the wedding,’ I said, cringing.

She winced, and I cursed myself. What an idiot.

The door closed behind her as I watched her walk to the building, her perfect ass leaving me for good. My breath hitched when she turned to look at me before looking around her and dashing back to the car. She ripped open my door and threw herself into my lap, her fingers sliding into my hair as her soft lips dragged at mine, her tongue slipping heat into my mouth as she moaned softly. The kiss was intense and slow, filled with longing and need as I poured everything into it.

Some people say that there is nothing like a first kiss, but knowing a kiss is the last one was a heady drug. I nipped at her lower lip as she ran her fingers down over my throat, pinning me back to the headrest with her want.

‘I’ll miss you, Daddy,’ she said as she broke the kiss, leaning her forehead against mine.

‘I’ll miss you too, pretty girl. More than you know.’

‘You know where I am... If you need me.’

With a final clash of our lips, she stole my heart right out of my mouth and took it with her as she left my world and went back to her own.

‘I need you,’ I whispered into the empty car as she dipped into the building and out of my view.

CHAPTER THIRTY THREE

VALENTINA

By the time the front door opened and Lara made her way noisily into the flat, I was curled up on the sofa watching reruns of American sitcoms with half of a greasy pizza on the table beside me.

‘Hello,’ she said, hanging up her coat and eyeing the half bottle of wine. ‘All okay?’
