“Have a good day, guys!” Robert yelled. “Nice to finally meet you, Helen and Heath.”

I shot him a dirty look. “It’sHannah.”

Once my siblings were out the door, I took a deep breath. “Why did you do that?”

“Do what?” He looked clueless.

“Tell my brother and sister I was your girlfriend.”

Robert shrugged. “Because it’s the truth.”

I shook my head. “What are you doing here, Robert?”

He held up the flowers. “I came to bring you these. And those...” He gestured toward the living room couch and a giant pile of gifts I hadn’t noticed.

“How…how could you have carried all of that?”

“My assistant carried half.”

I frowned. “The gorgeous little twenty-two-year-old, starry-eyed blonde you hired recently?”

Robert flashed a cocky grin. “Sounds like someone’s jealous.”

“Seriously, Robert, you should be in Italy. What are you doing here?”

He cupped my cheeks. “I came to apologize. You caught me off guard on the phone, and I acted like an asshole.”

In all the years Robert and I had been seeing each other, I didn’t think he’d ever apologized. I wasn’t sure what to do with it.

“Can you forgive me?” he pouted.

I sighed. “Of course.”

“I was just lashing out because I was hurt. So I wanted to make you hurt, too.”

“I know.”

“Can we talk? I can only stay for a few hours. I have to be on set tomorrow morning, so I have an afternoon return flight to Rome.”

“Sure. Let me put some clothes on.”

Robert tugged at my robe tie. “Or…you can take some off, and we can kiss and make up and talk later?”

I shook my head. “I’m going to go change.”

“Shame.” He winked. “You want to put these in water first?”

“I doubt Vera has a vase, and if she does, it’s probably not big enough to fit that rose bush you bought.” I pointed to the kitchen. “Why don’t you see if you can find one while I get dressed?”

“Sure.”

Inside the bedroom, I locked the door and leaned against it. I couldn’t believe Robert was here, that he’d come to apologize and talk. Any other time in the last three years, I would’ve been excited. But now…I wasn’t sure how I felt. I cared about him. That wasn’t a question. And I was relieved to know he wasn’t going to be a jerk about this pregnancy. That was a stress I didn’t need. But was I excited to see Robert the way I would’ve been a year ago? The type of excitement a woman gets when she hasn’t seen her man for a while?

A knock at the bedroom door startled me from my thoughts.

“Dev?”

“Yes?”
