The doors slid open at my floor. I’d worked thirteen hours today and couldn’t wait to get out of this suit, but…

I looked at Holden. “You mind if I change that showerhead?”

A smile spread across his face. “By all means.”

He handed me the toolbox and pressed the button for his floor.

“Good luck, buddy. Sounds like you’re gonna need it.” He waved as he stepped off the elevator. When the doors slid open again, I walked down the hall on the fourth floor. It had seemed like a good idea, but once I stood in front of Devyn’s door with the toolbox and showerhead, I started to doubt myself.

This is a bad idea.

How many times do you need to be blown off before you take the hint, Dawson?

After a few minutes of standing there, I started to turn around. But I stopped when the door abruptly swung open.

“Owen? What are you doing out here?” Devyn asked.

“Uh…” I held up the toolbox and showerhead. “I’m here to fix your bathroom.”

“I thought Holden was going to do that?”

“He’s, umm…on baby duty tonight. We all chip in to give him a break when we can since he didn’t get any official paternity leave.”

“Why were you standing out here for so long? Why didn’t you knock?”

Shit.“I was trying to remember if I had the right wrench in the toolbox or not.”

Her eyes narrowed. “Uh-huh…”

“How did you know I was out here?”

“I heard a noise and looked through the peephole. Thought it might be my brother and sister. You’ve been staring at my door for almost five minutes.”

“If you saw me standing here, why didn’t you open the door?”

She shrugged. “I was curious how long it was going to take you to knock.”

“Well, are you going to invite me in to fix your showerhead or leave me standing out here for your amusement a little longer?”

The corner of her lip twitched, but she took a few steps back and opened the door wide for me to enter.

“Thank you,” I said as I passed.

Her apartment was quiet. I set my supplies on the kitchen counter and looked around. “Where are Frick and Frack?”

“They stayed after school.”

“Voluntarily?”

Devyn shut the door and chuckled. “That’s how I reacted, too. I figured they had detention, but Hannah wanted to try out for something, and apparently Heath has a crush on some girl who’s also trying out. They promised they’d walk home together after.”

I nodded. “Heath seems like a good kid when he lets his guard down.”

“Ummm... You might rethink that statement after I tell you he posted the video he took of you running to save a mannequin in the elevator. Apparently it’s gone viral.”

I shook my head. “I should make him tag my real estate company so I get something out of it, other than looking like an idiot.”

Devyn smiled. “Speaking of your job, are you going to change the showerhead in that suit?”
