“Put that away while we’re eating,” I scolded.

“I can’t.”

“Excuse me?”

“I have to watch. It keeps going up and up.”

“What keeps going up and up?”

“The number of views and comments on that video I posted of Owen finding the mannequin in the elevator and thinking it was a dead body.”

I grabbed the phone and looked at his social media account.

Four-million views.

CHAPTER 5

Owen

“Hey! Hold the elevator!” I jogged toward the closing doors. Holden was already inside. He reached for the button panel, and the doors bounced open just as I made it across the lobby. “Thanks.”

“No problem.” Holden nodded. “You just getting home from work now?”

“Yeah. Long day. And it’s only freaking Wednesday.”

I pushed the button for the second floor, but noticed that the fourth floor was illuminated, not the third, where Holden’s apartment was. “You going up to four or didn’t press three yet?”

Holden held up his toolbox. “Gotta change a showerhead before I can call it a day. Told Devyn I’d get to it tonight so the kids can shower before school in the morning.”

My pulse quickened at the mention of her name. “Devyn, huh?”

Holden raised a brow. “There was a little tension between you and Brayden the other day at Billie’s photoshoot.”

I raked a hand through my hair. “That fucker hits on anything with legs.”

“Don’t worry. I got the feeling he took the hint when you growled at him.”

“I didn’t growl.”

Holden smiled. “You definitely marked your territory, dude.”

I sighed. “I should probably talk to him—tell him Devyn and I had a thing.”

“That’s a good idea. I’d want to know if I was him. He’d never hit on her if he knew you were interested.”

“Yeah.” I shook my head. “Though, beinginterestedisn’t getting me anywhere. Devyn wants nothing to do with me.”

“That sucks. Sorry, man.”

“I don’t know what it is about that woman. But I can’t stop thinking about her.”

“Whoa. That’s a strong statement coming from you. It’s been a while since anyone has caught your attention.”

“I know. And of course, I have to pick someone even more closed off than me.”

“What’s her deal? Does she have a boyfriend back home or something?”

I shrugged. “You probably know as much as I do. We had that one great night together. Then she disappeared on me before I could get her number, and every time I go anywhere near her now, she either slams a door in my face or hightails it out before I can get in more than a sentence or two. The only reason I know anything at all about her situation is because the kid, Heath, filled me in the other day.”
