We sat in the park for a while. The fall breeze greets us, causing my hair to fly in all directions and the chilly wind to rise on my skin. My jacket is in my car.

Jake wraps his leather jacket around my shoulder and tucks my hair behind my ears. He wraps his arm around me and tucks me in beside him.

“Aren’t you cold?” I ask him, tilting my head.

He smiles as he stares down at me. “I’m hot.” He winks, and my heart skips a beat just thinking about it.

My phone rings.Mom.I pick it up and say, “Hello.”

“Rose, where are you? I just got home,” she speaks from the other side.

“I’m with Jake. I’ll be back soon.” I say, looking at Jake.

“Is he okay?” She asks. For the past few days, even she was worried about him.

“Yeah. He was staying with a friend,” I tell her, eager to end the call.

“Give him the phone,” she says that, and I close my eyes tightly. This is what I was afraid of.

Jake looks at me confused, and I pass him my phone.

“Hello?” He greets my mom.

They talked for roughly a minute; Mom does the talking. Jake just keeps nodding. “Yes, Mrs. Evans.”

He smirks in my direction after a little pause. “Yes, Sherill.”

He hangs up the phone and hands me my phone back.

“What did she say? Please tell me she didn’t warn you not to see me.”

“She did not,” Jake says, and I feel at ease. He goes on. “Even if she did, do you think I’d stop?”

I lean back against his chest, my lips curling into a smile.

“It’s nice to know that there are people who care about you,” he says this with a sad tone in his voice.

“Was I invisible?” I snort. He flicks my nose, and I swat his hand away.

We return to school to retrieve my car. He shuts the door before I can go out, and I turn to face him. He places his hand on the base of my neck and pulls me towards him, slanting his head.

Our lips connect in a beautiful kiss, and I don’t get a chance to say anything. It’s just been a few days, yet it feels like an eternity.

I break the kiss, breathless; his forehead touches mine, and his breath fans my cheek.

A crease appears on his face, and I couldn’t help but ask, “Everything okay?”

“Yeah.” He slowly opened his eyes.

“You go first,” I say, returning his jacket before getting in my car.

My gaze is drawn to the gift-wrapped box perched nicely on my dashboard. Instead of leaving the parking lot, he follows me back home. He’s a jerk, but he’s a crazy, idiotic one.

I take the box and go over to him; he raises his eyebrows.

“This is for you.” I hold the box in front of him.

He picks it up and rips the box and wrapper open.
