“I’m not one of those girls,” True said.

“Truth be told, you’re not a girl anymore.”

“Ouch, but right back at ya, babe,” True said. “As we’re the same age. Doh.”

Hope grimaced. “I do forget that at times,” she replied.

“So, back to the future, we know that the day dark and long is the eclipse tomorrow, but the other bit.”

“Hark the heart’s song?” Hope shrugged. “Listen for music?”

“Heart’s song,” True reminded her. “That’s a love song, right?”

“Could well be.”

“And not for me.”

“Huh?” Hope looked confused.

“I’m mated, remember?” True said. “Sooo, somebody is going to hear the heart’s song, but not me.” True felt a rush of relief and grinned accordingly while Hope drifted off somewhere thinking about it. “Maybe it’s you!”

“Bite your tongue!” Hope said, pulling back and eyeing her friend with horror.

CHAPTER FOUR

“Don’t fancy a mate?”

“Hell no!” Hope said, eyeing True as if she’d just grown another head.

“How judgy of you.”

“Bite me,” Hope replied.

True gasped and snapped her fingers on a eureka moment. “How about a vampire forever love?” The teasing smile said it all, earning her the middle finger in return.

“From me to you with love,” Hope said, circling her finger in the air before she turned on her heels and stalked away.

True followed Hope into the bar, heard the music through the speakers, and chuckled. “Let’s turn that up a bit,” she said, using her magic to increase the volume.

“This ain’t a love song,” Hope said over her shoulder, but she couldn’t help but feel the fine hairs on her body start to stand to attention.

“That’s what Bon Jovi said, but who didn’t slow dance to that anyway?” True reminded her of a particular night in their long-forgotten past when Hope had danced to Bon Jovi’s hit with a guy she went on to date for all of two weeks.

Hope turned, glaring at her friend. “It’s not me.”

“That would be a crying shame,” True said, enjoying her friend’s denial and subsequent nervousness. She leaned in. “Better watch out; a wolf might be stalking your every move.” Hope did what all good witches do; she zapped her friend. “Ouch.”

“I’m not the one who needs to watch out; you are, the mate would, and so would that damn pirate ghost if he’s meddling in my life,” Hope informed her. “Now, we have work to do.”

Hope turned and made a hasty retreat to the safety of the kitchen. True couldn’t help but chuckle – Hope and romance? That would be something to behold.

“It’s a mess,” Drew said, eyeing the inside of the guesthouse and pulling the face he always did when they had a big job to do, and he would be taking the lead on it.

“We knew that,” Heath said, flicking on the bathroom light and screwing up his face at the sight of the pink bathtub and basin. “We were going to buy the place and remodel ourselves.”
