“I like that can-do attitude,” Hope said, grinning. “Let’s get to work.”

“There is one other matter,” Faith said, and everyone turned to look at her.

“Oh, no,” Dani said, shaking her head. “I get the feeling nobody wants to hear this.”

“Seconded,” Amy said, raising her hand. “Keep it to yourself.”

“Hey, knowing is what kept us alive,” Faith said. “Except Nana, but that was wet hands and electricity.”

Hope and True shared a look. True rolled her eyes. “Go on then, what’s next in the ghostly list of horrors?”

“Day without end, mate without a friend,” Faith said. Then she frowned as she turned to the wolf. “Hey, Parker, do you have any pack loners with no friends?”

The wolf shook its head, and Jennifer chuckled. “That’s a no, right?” she asked the beast. Then wolf slowly nodded. “That’s a yes!” she said excitedly. “What’s a maybe?” The wolf circled his head to chuckles from the child. “What’s Aunt Evie is mad?” The wolf lowered himself to the ground and covered both eyes with his paws. Jennifer was chuckling hard. “I like that one!”

“Oh!” Hope exclaimed and slapped a backwards hand at True’s arm.

“Hey!” True said, eyeing her from beneath her lowered eyebrows.

“You didn’t do it, did you?” Hope demanded.

“I might have,” True said. “What it are we speaking about?”

“The it where you called me a mate!” Hope said. “Mate without friend – lone wolf – tell me you didn’t.”

True cocked an eyebrow at Hope, and her friend held her breath. “Weeeellll….” True said with a slight grimace.

“Oh – my – grandmother!” Hope said, shooting to her feet from the couch and eyeing True like she wanted her pound of flesh.

True reached up, snagged Hope’s dress and yanked her back down again. “No, I didn’t do it, but I had you going there for a moment, right?” She grinned like Jack Nicholson in The Shinning, and Hope pulled her head back and narrowed her eyes.

Then Hope clicked her fingers and slapped True with a magic jolt that made the witch shriek and jump in place. “And that’s your reward for giving me a minor heart attack,” Hope said.

“And that’s not good at her age,” Faith said, grinning with amusement.

“Hey!” Hope and True said as one.

“Can I take Parker for a walk?” Jennifer asked. “Like now?”

Evie shook her head. “Nope, we’ve all got to get to work, Parker included,” she said and saw Jennifer’s shoulders slump.

The wolf pushed up, walked to Jennifer and slowly, gently bit down on her dress and tugged it. Jennifer looked at her aunt. “If that gets ripped, it’s not my fault,” she said earnestly.

“I think he wants you to go with him,” Evie said. Even with Jennifer’s dress in his mouth, she was sure that wolf grinned. “Oh! Maybe he needs to go home to change.”

“Into his human?” Jenifer said.

“And into his clothes,” Amy said. “I would be interested in seeing his wolf drive to work, though. That would turn some heads.”

“I guess we’ll meet you guys at work,” Evie said.

“Do you want us to take Jen with us?” Amy asked. “You know, in case you’re gonna be late?”

Evie stared long and hard at Amy. “Noooo, I’ve got this, thanks.”

“Let’s go, wolfie!” Jennifer said, excited to be walking her new friend.

“Day without end,” Dani said. “Is that June twenty-first, the longest day?”
