CHAPTER TWENTY FIVE

~

“I’ve got this; you go open the front door,” Parker said, leaning into the car through the open door, ready to snag a sleeping Jennifer but waiting for Evie's repeat of the previous night.

“Okay,” Evie said, turning on her heels and walking away.

Parker froze for a moment with surprise. There had been no claim on the child, no war of words, just acceptance that he should be allowed to carry the child – progress – and he liked it.

“I’m not asleep,” Jennifer said, which also caught him by surprise. “I’m supposed to be having a sleepover with Amy and Dani tonight; it’s a girl thing,” she informed him. “Are they home yet?”

Parker straightened and eyed the house a few doors down. “No lights on,” he said. “No car outside.”

“I can wait,” Jennifer said.

“Do you want me to carry you to the house?” he asked.

“No, I can walk,” Jennifer said, squirming in her seat before pushing out of the car.

“You woke her?” Evie asked.

“I was snoozing,” Jennifer said before Parker could explain. “I’m too excited to sleep properly.”

“Excited?” Evie asked. “You should be pooped with all the excitement you’ve had today.”

“Apparently, she’s waiting for her sleepover,” Parker said.

“Sleepover?” Evie looked confused. “First I’ve heard about it.”

“At Amy’s,” Jennifer informed her.

Evie scowled. “Oh, that’s not a good…”

At the sound of a car coming down the road, Jennifer started to jump on the spot like Tigger. “There they are!” she exclaimed.

Evie just happened to look at Parker at that moment, and boy did that man look like Mr Paws when he snagged the cream. It suddenly dawned on her that her friends were throwing her under the mating bus. “I’m just going to…” She pointed back over her shoulder at the car pulling up, turned on her heels and made a fast getaway. “Kill my friends,” she muttered, watching Jennifer skip ahead of her.

“Hey, Jen,” Amy said.

“We’re having a sleepover now,” Jennifer informed Amy. “I’m happy!”

“We are?” Amy said, looking at Dani for confirmation, but Dani offered a shrug and a blank look back. “Yea!”

Dani offered Jennifer the door keys. “Go open the door.” Jennifer didn’t need telling twice; she snatched the keys and ran to the house.

Evie was still scowling. “I do not appreciate being thrown under the mating bus,” she said.

Amy snatched another look at Dani, and the witch shrugged again. “Huh?”

“Huh?” Evie said, narrowing her eyes at Amy and waiting for the punchline.

“Look, We don’t mind a sleepover if you wanna get your groove on with Parker,” she looked over Evie's shoulder to where the big shifter stood beside Evie's car, eagerly watching and waiting. “But, a little notice would have been a good thing.”

“Huh?” Evie said, doubly confused, and then it hit her – Jennifer! “Wait, you didn’t invite Jennifer to a sleepover tonight?”

“Not me,” Amy said. “But I don’t have a problem with it.”

Evie looked at Dani, and the witch held her hands up in mock surrender. “Not guilty,” she rushed out.
