True slapped a hand over her mouth and chuckled into it. Faith had a habit of going toe-to-toe with the elder, and True had a habit of enjoying the show. Nothing changes.

“If you feel you’ve got this in hand, I will,” Nana said. “Do you think you can manage it?”

“We’ve done okay so far,” Faith said.

“Your sister has mated with an alpha, you have pink hair and an attitude problem, and neither of you knows how to deal with a pesky ghost. How much more does it take to realise you are failing upwards?”

Faith frowned. “I don’t know what that means.”

“I’m not surprised,” Nana muttered. “I want to see this ship.”

“But it’s night,” True said.

“When the ghost comes out,” Faith said, smiling.

Nana frowned. “You’re saying I should play it safe and wait until the light of day tomorrow when I don’t get to meet this ghost and find out what his wandering soul needs?”

True opened her mouth to speak but could see Nana’s point, so she closed it again. “When you put it like that,” she said with a slight sigh.

“And as this ghost seems to be attached to you, True, you can come with me,” Nana said.

“Hey, wait, can I come?” Faith asked. She wanted to meet this ghost. Maybe she could get more information from his cryptic clues and solve the mystery of the treasure.

Nana cocked an eyebrow. “Have you ever seen the ghost?”

“Nope.”

“It’s probably wondering what’s on your head. No, you’d be more hindrance than help,” Nana informed her. “Stay here; polish some cutlery.” She turned to True, who looked unhappy about going anywhere near that wreck, even with Nana in tow. “Let’s go ghostbusting.”

“Don’t get slimed,” Faith said, chuckling as she watched them go.

Evie noted the truck had followed her from the bar to her new home. She said nothing to Jennifer as the child finally nodded off in the passenger seat. She knew who it was, her so-called mate, which only raised her irritation level as she pulled up outside the house, and the outside light sensed a presence and came on.

It had been something else when True had found herself with a mate. She had enjoyed teasing her about it, but secretly, she’d enjoyed living vicariously through True’s wooing experience.

The mating sounded like the sort of fun she hadn’t let herself have since embracing the whole aunt-mother thing with Jennifer.

Even if she could afford babysitters, which she couldn’t, they had been down on their luck for a while now; the dating scene was in her rearview mirror until Jennifer was old enough that it didn’t become an issue. Introducing a man who might not stay in Jennifer’s life scared the hell out of her. Jennifer had enough loss; she didn’t need more.

Not being Jennifer’s mother seemed to come with the extra sense of responsibility not to screw up, and she was constantly second-guessing herself and wondering what her sister would have done in her place.

Evie wished her niece had come with a manual penned by her sister when she had done her ‘just in case’ will and left the child’s upbringing to her. It might have made life easier, but she guessed the chapter on what to do about a shifter mate wouldn’t have been in there.

Now the mate in question was in her rearview mirror, and she didn’t have a clue how to handle it.

In truth, if there was going to be a man in the picture, it was probably better that it was a mate who came with a surefire guarantee not to screw her over and leave, but that still didn’t help.

With a tired sigh, she pulled the keys from the ignition and turned to look at her sleeping ward. Nothing said the sugar rush had worn off more than a little snore of contentment, andJennifer looked like a gift from the goddess when she was fast asleep, didn’t they all, even the little monsters?

Without looking, Evie popped open the car door and thrust it outward with a kick that would keep it open and not let it slam back on her. There was a hard grunt as the door connected with something and tried to buckle her outstretched knee.

“Hit on target,” Parker said, groaning out a long breath as he tried to minimise the pain to his nose. He’d been leaning down and in to look inside the vehicle when she’d thrust the door in his face, and lucky him, he’d pushed his hands into the front of his jeans so she wouldn’t be scared of him. He’d stood no chance of blocking the door-to-nose connection.
