“Us?” Amy said, her voice climbing higher. “Hell no.”

“Nope, not necessary,” Evie said. “We were just leaving.”

Parker’s wolf didn’t like that idea; of all the visitors he’d had today, it seemed to like one better than most. The beast clawed a little inside him, but Parker refused to be baited by the witches or the wolf.

Parker grinned to himself as they hightailed it from the room. He shook his head and returned to the bathroom, but his beast wasn’t having any of it. The witches had made him curious, but he wasn’t about to give in to his wilder side. He had a job to do, and he would do it.

Parker put a brace behind the hand basin and yanked. His mind was on other things, and he might have put too much effort into it, or the thing might have been there so long that it didn’t need much force.

It tore from the wall and hit the steel toecap of his work boots, but the top curled forward and caught him in the shins.

“Mother fu…!” he growled at the pain as he sucked a deep breath through his nose and immediately regretted it.

There on the air was the scent that sent his beast wild with knowing. He kicked the wash basin off his feet, turned to the open doorway, braced his hands against the doorframe and took a big old whiff of the air.

“Mine,” his beast growled.

CHAPTER EIGHT

~

“Are you staring at that ship again?” Faith asked her sister, who seemed mesmerised by the sight as she stood at the railings on the deck, taking her break. “Giving it the evil eye won’t make it disappear. I suppose we could shrink it and put it in a bottle, but I fear the locals might notice if it went missing.”

“Come here,” True said, motioning for her sister to join her. When Faith was at her side, tray in hand, True pointed to the wreck. “Does something look odd to you?”

“I don’t see dead people,” Faith said with a mocking grin.

“No, seriously,” True said.

“Seriously, I do not see dead people, and I don’t mind if it stays that way,” Faith said. “Although, it might make it easier if I did.”

“It’s not dead people. Look at the ship; doesn’t it seem larger?”

“Nope.”

“Maybe a little closer?” True asked.

“It’s a ship; it’s not going to move,” Faith said.

True snorted a chuckle. “Because ships don’t move?”

“Not dead ships,” Faith said. “What, you think the whole ship is coming to get us now?” She snorted a chuckle. “Relax, True. That ship is…”

“Closer,” Lex said from the beach below.

“Thank you!” True said before realising who it was she was talking to. “And you are so barred from this bar.”

Lex looked up, frowning. “What’d I do?”

“Witch, ship, bet, me, wooing,” True said. “Do you need me to draw you a picture because we’re kid friendly during the day, and I have crayons?”

“It was just an incentive,” Lex said. “The alpha was sitting on the pot and needed to poop or get off.”

“And the witch?” True asked, motioning to the shipwreck.

“Well, that was thrown in for fun,” he replied. “Brought out the alpha’s protective side rather nicely.”

“Made me look like a nutjob,” True said.
