Evie blew out a hard breath. “You can say that again.”

“There might not even be a mate,” True said. “It’s just Faith putting two and two together and probably coming up with eight.”

“Poor Dani,” Amy said, shaking her head.

“What did I just say?” True said with disbelief. “Nobody has done anything to make anybody believe there is a mate!”

Amy pulled her head back. “Okay,” she said, shrugging. “Someone is in denial.”

“Ugh!” True said, stalking off towards the bar.

Evie and Amy turned inquiring looks on Hope. Hope raised her hands in mock surrender. “Don’t look at me; I’m just the one spreading this rumour.”

“Does Dani know?” Amy asked.

“I don’t think so,” Hope said. “She hasn’t run for the hills and is not in the kitchen battering things with a rolling pin.”

“The calm before the storm,” Evie said, shrugging. “Should be interesting.”

“Not for Dani,” Amy said. She turned narrowed eyes on Hope. “Who is this guy?”

“Parker, we think,” Hope replied, frowning. “He’s in the guesthouse now doing a little…” Both witches were out of the door before she finished. “Maybe not the best-laid plan,” she said, eyeing the crowded bar. “More work for me.”

Heath strolled into the bar and spotted True clearing one of the tables at the back. He headed straight for her, and when she turned, tray in hand, she almost walked into him. “Oh, geez,” she said, nearly dropping the tray, but Heath already had a hand on it.

“Pirate?” he asked, a teasing smile on his lips.

True frowned. “No!” she said but giggled. When Heath raised his eyebrows, she caved. “Although I was giving the ship the evil eye just before I turned around.”

Heath nodded with a knowing smile. “Well, good news,” he said but frowned.

“Your forehead says maybe not,” True said.

Heath took the tray and put it on the nearest table. Then he took her hand and nodded outside. “We need to talk.”

“About the mate?” True asked, sidestepping tables and chairs as she followed him.

“We did that,” Heath said, leading her to the railings and boxing her in from view.

“Not us mate, them mate,” True replied.

“What mate?” Heath asked, confused.

“Well, Faith has it in her head that the second line of the pirate thing, day dark and long, hark the heart’s song, is actually about mates – the second part, not the first, that’s the eclipse.”

“Which is what I need to talk to you about,” Heath said.

“Oh, the eclipse? Does it do something to your wolf?” True asked.

“Yes, but no, not the eclipse.”

“The mates?”

“What mates?” Heath asked, losing his chain of thought. He had something important to tell her and figured she wouldn’t like it. He didn’t have time for Faith’s hare-brained antics.

True waved her hands. “Never mind.”
