Eris squinted as she stared at me.

“Do you think your family would come?”

“Do you mean considering your father shot my brother’s boyfriend and then crashed my father’s funeral?”

“What is this?” Lucien asked. “Crashed your father’s…”

“It’s nothing,” Eris dismissed. “Water under the bridge. This is about starting our new lives together. A fresh start.”

“Yes, a fresh start,” Lucien said enthusiastically.

“What do you think, Remy? Would your family come?”

“Would we have a choice?”

“Of course. An engagement party would be about celebration. If you truly see a path to happiness, I think this is a step on it.”

I considered what Eris said. “I’m not hosting an engagement party.”

“You don’t have to. We could rent somewhere,” Eris suggested.

“Agh!” Lucien groaned. “You Americans are so impersonal.”

“How about my father’s place on Long Island? It’s big yet personal. And you can walk out onto the beach.”

“Ah, the beach,” Lucien said intrigued. “This sounds good, no?”

I hesitated. “I don’t know if I would be up for this. A lot has gone down between our two families.”

“That’s an even better reason to do it. Please, Remy, I have looked past a lot of stuff and you know it. I deserve this. Give this to me.”

I looked at Eris with sincerity. “You’re right, you deserve this. I’ll talk to my family. Everyone will be there.”

“Oh Remy, thank you,” she said clutching my hand from across the table. “I’m so excited.”

“Me too,” I told her before turning to Lucien who greeted me with a wink.

When dinner was done I told Eris that I was going to spend some time with Lucien since I was the reason he was in town and he didn’t know anyone else here. As far as I could tell, she bought the excuse so it became my go-to for whenever we needed to get together to go over plans.

“Remind me again how we’re gonna get into the safe,” Cali demanded as tense as ever.

“Remind me if getting into the safe is your job,” I retorted.

“No, but…”

“Then why don’t you just focus on your part of the plan and not screw that up,” I shot back quieting him.

“Fine, then how about you remind me,” Jimmy said standing up threateningly. “Considering the FBI is funding this little venture, I think the Bureau has a right to know.”

My eyes darted between Cali and Jimmy who now stood together against me. A part of me wanted to tell the both of them to fuck off but I had to admit that Jimmy’s toys were fun.

“Let’s just say that the work I did for my father required unique skills.”

“So, you’re going to crack the safe,” Jimmy asked bluntly.

Not fully trusting Jimmy, I wasn’t about to answer that. “If I encounter a safe, it won’t stop me from getting what I want.”

Jimmy’s eyebrow raised suspiciously. “Should we make a contingency plan for any type of explosion?”
