CHAPTER

Carter

The whole flight Icouldn't drag my mind off of Vivian, the way she moved, the way she smelled, smiled, laughed and the way her face lit up when she saw her son Parker. The same way I wished she would light up for me, but I was just the player that lived in the building. The one she vowed to stay away from, so often that if I didn't know any better I would say she had to keep telling herself that just to keep from allowing the pull I knew we both felt towards one another from taking over. “You okay over there, man?” Hudson asked.

“I'm fine.”

“Okay, but I'm here if you ever want to tell me about this woman who's got you so twisted up inside.”

“Yeah, well I seem to remember how that worked out for me last time I tried to talk to you guys about her.”

“Aww come on man, we were just giving you shit. Just like you’ve given us at one point or another about the women in our lives.”

“Yeah, I guess I can see now why you guys got so pissed at me. Let me ask you this, did you feel the same way with Presley, not knowing if you were coming or going or just so confused and frustrated that you wanted to hit something?”

Laughing, he clutched his stomach. “Brother you have no idea how fucked up in the head that woman had me. By the time you saw us together we had waded through most of that shit, but yeah, I was confused, and that woman had my balls so twisted up around her little pinky finger I didn't know what was happening. Hell, she had me so frustrated that I spent more time beating that old bag out in the barn, at my grandfather’s ranch, than I care to admit.” Chuckling, he finished. “I've never been so pissed off and sexually frustrated at the same time in all my life! I wanted to ring her neck and fuck her at the same time she had me so messed up. Hell, she still does that shit to me. But I tell you what, I wouldn't trade it or her for anything in the world, because at the end of the day I fucking love that woman like I've never loved anyone in my life. Just like I will love our baby boy when he's born.”

“A son?!” I practically shouted with excitement for him.

“A son, we just found out yesterday.”

“Congratulations, brother,” I said, slapping his shoulder.

“Thanks man, but look, seriously, if it's not hard to get her then any man can have her. If you have to work for it, then it's worth it in the end.”

“Thanks, I really needed to hear that. I can't believe you went through all that with Presley... shit never mind I almost forgot I already knew the woman,” I chuckled jokingly.

“Hey now, that's the love of my life and the mother of my child you’re talking about there,” he said, trying to sound serious. “But yeah, at least she's having a boy, that way I won't get ganged up on by Presley and her mini me. I do want a little girl, a little Presley, though, running around one day.”

“So more kids are planned I take it?”

“Oh yeah, we want one of each, so I'll just have to keep knocking her up until I get my little girl.”

Hearing the kind of love Hudson and Presley have and knowing the kind of love Porter and Keira had and now Vance, Brice and Lily, made me long for those feelings with someone, too, one day. Technically not just someone, I already knew who she was.

Once we landed and had our rental car, we both made several attempts to get a hold of Vance and Brice, and when we couldn't reach them, we both began to worry something had gone wrong. Before I could call him, Kelan was calling my phone. I swear that man had cameras everywhere. Or a chip in our brains since he was always one step ahead of us. “Hey, what's going on? We can't reach Brice or Vance,” I said, putting the call on speaker.

“That's why I was calling. The GPS tracker on Lily says that she's at Northwestern Memorial hospital.”

“Shit!” Hudson and I voiced at almost the same time. “Do we know who’s hurt?” Hudson questioned.

“I called... it’s Vance and Brice, man.”

Both Hudson and I exchanged looks of panic. “Do we know their conditions?”

“No, they were both in surgery from gunshot wounds when I called.”

“Fuck!” I yelled out, worried.

“Look, I'm on the next flight out to you guys. Tina is going to hold down the fort until we get back because I'm not going to just sit here and wait for you guys to call, so I'll see you both in a couple of hours. If you hear anything you call me or text me, got it?”

“Got it, brother.”

“Oh someone needs to call Porter, and Tanner, they need to know what's going on.”

“I’ll call them both right now on our way to the hospital.” I assured him before we disconnected the call. The silence in the
