CHAPTER

33

Keira

Knowing Porter hadn't slept much the night before, I couldn't help but worry that he knew something that I didn't. I wanted to hope that if my life were in danger in some way that he would tell me and not hide it from me, but then again, he'd always been so damn protective over me. So I decide to just ask after staring at him for a few moments, trying to figure things out for myself. "Is something going on, Porter?"

Sitting across the table from me, drinking his coffee and reading the paper, my question had his head snapping up and looking around before his eyes landed on me. "What are you talking about?"

"The way you're acting and the fact that I know you barely slept last night."

He let out a heavy breath. "Look, I'm just concerned about keeping you safe and I was up last night thinking of escape routes from the cabin if God forbid, we should need one," reaching out and taking my hand in his, he finished. "You are my only concern right now, and if I lose a little sleep over it here and there to keep you safe, then I'm okay with that."

I studied him for a moment, trying to figure out if what he was telling me was the truth. "You would tell me if there was something wrong, right? You know I'm strong enough to handle it. I won't break."

Getting up and walking around the table, he sat down in the chair beside me and pulled me onto his lap. “Ker, I know you are a strong and very independent woman and I respect the hell out of you for that. You’ve been through more shit in your life than one person should ever have to endure, but I’m here now, and I love you so much that I would do anything, including giving my life for yours. I just need you to trust in me that I know what's best for your safety. If there is something you need to know I will tell you."

"That was one hell of a way to evade my question," I told him half playing, half serious.

"Hey Porter, can I talk to you for a second?" Vance announced suddenly, walking in the front door.

"Sure, be right there." Looking back to me Porter asked. "Are we good here?"

"We're good." Unsure if it was really true, he kissed my lips and patted my ass as he got up to walk out the door with Vance.

When they didn't return for a while, I headed out back to explore the beautiful landscape at the back of the cabin. Finding a trail that ran around the edge of the lake, I followed it along as I took in all that nature had to offer. It was beautiful up here, and now I understood why they’d named this place Heaven. When I got about halfway around the lake, I could see the cabin from where I stood and heard an overly concerned call from Porter. Waving my hands in the air, I finally caught his attention and yelled back at him. "I'm coming back now!" Turning to head back, I moved along quickly, feeling bad that I'd probably worried him, and he was probably going to be pissed that I just wandered off without telling him. Especially with everything that had been going on. As I moved down the trail, I heard what sounded like a branch breaking beneath someone's feet. Stopping cold in my tracks, I took in my surroundings and searched for any sort of movement. Not hearing or seeing anything, I chocked it up to it probably being an animal that had made the sound and began to turn around to head back to the cabin when I felt a hand grip my shoulder and spin me around, causing me to scream out.

"Hey, it's just me," Porter said, hugging me.

"Shit! You scared me to death!"

"What the hell are you doing all the way out here anyway? I freaked the fuck out when I couldn't find you."

"Well, you two were busy having your secret little powwow, so I decided to explore the lake."

"Let's just get back to the cabin," he pushed me in front of him as his eyes swept the area around us.

"Is everything okay, or are you going to keep whatever has you on edge now hidden from me, too?"

"I'm happy to fill you in Ker, but after we are back at the cabin."
