“Well, this took longer than I thought it did, but mostly because we were catching up with the guys. As I got in the van, I got a text from Gerald saying that they were done and heading back to mine. They also offered to come and help if we needed it.” Rome explains.

“Well fuck, we should get them to do clean-ups more often,” I mutter, impressed with how quickly they’ve dealt with it all.

“Right? You could never say that they don’t know what they are doing,” Ace replies.

We hum in agreement, and then the van falls silent as we head back to Rome’s house and the grandparents.

“They’re an interesting group, those three,” Rip says into the silence.

“That’s an understatement,” I reply and then add, “It’s not my story to tell, but I really hope that one day, you guys will be able to get to know each other properly and talk for longer than a few minutes.”

“I think we’d all like that,” Ace replies, and then adds, “So what did the super secret spy uncle guy give you?”

I burst out laughing, “Super secret spy uncle guy?”

Ace shrugs, “Yeah, I think it has a ring to it. Plus, it's obvious that’s what he is.”

Chapter Thirteen

Ismirk but decline to answer or give anything away; that is, again, something that isn’t my information to divulge, although I’m sure they’ll know the ins and outs of Alaric and everything that goes on with him soon enough. They already know he works for the government.

“To answer your question,” I reply, ignoring Ace’s knowing smile, “he gave me high tech top of the range earpieces for the jobs that we do.”

Ace’s eyes widen, his previous line of inquiry completely abandoned as he makes grabby hands at me, “Oh gimme, I want to see.”

Chuckling, I hand them over, “I was hoping you’d be able to figure out all the important stuff that we need to know about them and then dumb it down for me because I’m already confused.”

Ace’s lips twitch, “I can totally do that.”

“What do you think we’re going to be walking in on when we get back to the estate?” Mason suddenly asks, changing the subject, which is a good thing because I think we’ve lost Ace to the earpieces for a while.

“Fuck knows,” Rome replies, as we head back and, this time, go through the town, and I get a better look at the place. We’re not hiding anymore; everyone has been dealt with, and apart from the smugglers, everything can now be repaired and put back to how it was when the grandparents ran the town.

“Well, I’m betting they’ve started celebrating already and that half of them are drunk,” Malachi grins as he makes his suggestion.

“It’s only two in the afternoon,” I point out.

“Yeah, I get the feeling that makes absolutely no difference to them. Especially Cecil. Although, if he wants to light the bonfire now, then he better be partially sober because there’s no way that I’m risking him setting himself alight,” Rip replies.

“Both very good points,” I agree as we pull through Rome’s gates, and I look over everyone.

We really do look worse for wear, all of us covered in bruises, cuts, and blood, some of it ours and some of it not. I think it’s fortunate that the grandparents won’t bat an eyelid at our appearance; at least, I’m assuming they won't, judging from Gerald’s previous reactions when we’ve been in a similar state.

“Before we go in, no one has any injuries that need to be dealt with right now, do they?” Rome asks, clearly following my line of thinking.

“Nope, I’m all good. My leg is just sore. There’s nothing seriously wrong with it,” Rip replies.

“Same with my ribs,” Ace adds, sounding completely distracted by the earpieces.

“We’ve just got superficial injuries,” Mason replies for both him and Malachi.

“Good, Jynx? Are you all good?” Rome asks me, his eyebrow raising in a stern look that just turns me on and doesn’t actually do what he thinks it does. I like it though, so I’m not going to tell him otherwise and risk him not looking at me like that anymore.

I start to nod and then pause, “Oh, actually, I think the slice on my arm needs a couple of stitches but other than that, I’m all good.”

Rome stares at me, looking exasperated, “Seriously, we could’ve dealt with that before we did any of this.”

“I know, but it really isn’t bad enough to warrant putting everything on hold just to stitch me up,” in order to prove my point, I take my arm out of my jacket and pull down the neck of my shirt so that I can show them.
