“Open them,” I demand, and she does, irritation flashing through them before it’s quickly replaced with lust.

“We’re almost home,” she says, and my brain is so focused on how she’s about to come that I barely register that she called the compound home. I tell myself I’ll ponder that later. That’s not a question for right now.

Pulling my fingers from her, I place them on my tongue, running it over them one by one as I taste her for the first time. “Fucking perfect,” I moan, gripping the wheel again. “When we get in there, get up to my room. Don’t you dare take your dress off. I’ve been thinking about taking it off of you all day.”

“Yes sir,” she tells me with a smirk, her attitude making an appearance once more.

“I’m really glad I’ve learned I can fuck the attitude out of you,” I respond, and her mouth clamps shut. “May have to take advantage of that.”

She crosses her arms over her chest, pretending to look out the window when I can see her casting short sideways glances my way before her eyes move down over my chest and to my lap, my pants tight as my dick strains the fabric.

Pulling into the compound feels like a relief. But not for long.

Jerry sits on the couch, watching us pull in.

“Fuck,” I say, looking at Sydney. “Get yourself straight and go up to the room. I’ll be there in a minute.

She nods, not bothering to say anything. We both know that it’s the best option.

I get out first, staying behind my car as I wait for Jerry to come over. Her hair is in a messy bun on top of her head, her sweats stained. She’s been stressing today.

“How was it?” she asks as she stands next to Sydney’s door, her arms over her chest as she shifts her weight to one leg.

“It was fine,” I tell her simply. “We definitely got Jeffrey’s attention. I think we’ll be hearing from him in no time.”

She nods, looking me over.

“You have lipstick on your mouth,” she says simply. There’s no malice there. No annoyance. Just stating a fact.

“We had to—”

“Ronan, I promise you I don’t give a fuck. You guys can fuck every single day if you want as long as this job gets done.”

I clamp my mouth shut. Noted.

Jerry grabs the passenger-side door handle, opening it for Sydney. I’m really glad nothing else happened. She still looks fairly put together.

“Get upstairs,” Jerry barks, not bothering to be nice to her.

“Do you want me to—”

“No. Go upstairs.”

Sydney looks at me, and I nod once. Her lips thin as she heads for the stairs. I watch as she disappears.

“Listen,” Jerry starts, leaning against the roof of my car. Her black hair falls out of her bun, and her eyes are sleepy. “I mean what I said. I don’t care what you guys do. Truly. I don’t want to hear about it, but I don’t care. But you need to keep your head on your shoulders, got it? Don’t let some girl mess you up.”

“She’s your—”

“She’s some girl who’s going to leave after this mission is over. You guys are going to get divorced, and she’s going to go on her merry way. She’s going to find someone who lives a normal life, can give her kids, and she’s going to get married and have a family.”

Her words hit hard. I know that that’s what’s going to happen. I know that I can’t give her a family. I know that she’s never going to be happy with me. Not really, anyway. But I want her to be. Desperately, for some reason I don’t understand, I want her to be.

But this is Jerry. Jerry, the same woman who has nursed me back to health for years when I’ve been sick, just like she’s done for the other three. She’s the same one who makes sure that we come back home safe every single day. The same woman willing to walk in front of a bullet for each and every one of us.

She has a point, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t hurt.

“I just don’t understand this draw,” I tell her, looking at my hands.
