From the same small box the camera came in, she took out the contact lens and put it over her left eye. Blinking to make the appliance comfortable, she now had two different images to sort through.

Sitting cross-legged behind a low hanging rock ledge, she closed her right eye to concentrate on the images Shther sent. Taking BoD from the harness on her back, she placed the crossbow across her lap. When she held it, BoD could see what she did. How that worked, she had no clue. Some things were best left a mystery.

With clenched fingers, she watched the tense scene. Apparently, the group in the room was in some type of argument she had a hard time following. Not that she cared what they argued about until someone mentioned the evil sub-Prince Murduk. Looked like the bad guy was desperate to steal one of Inanna’s sons as blackmail and force her to return to Akurn to marry him.

Hmm, now there was a thought. She could enthrall one of those sons and force him to come with them. She was sure her friends would love to offer Murduk a chance to swap one of those sons for Sychar.

The more she thought about it, the more she liked the idea.

Now, which one? Let’s see, who in the room were Inanna’s sons?

The tall one standing with his hands behind his back looked more Akurn with his long white hair and pale complexion. But his exposed pointed ears gave him away. Not to mention the dual yellow-turquoise eyes that were larger than an Akurn’s or a human’s.

She studied him. Well, he might be a viable candidate, but something about him made her shiver. She doubted she’d be able to enthrall him for long.

There were two other prospects sitting at the round table. One man had dark-blond hair, the other was deep brunet. Both sat next to identical twin females who looked familiar for some reason. And they had to be those guys’ girlfriends, wives, or whatever.

Each couple spent more time gazing into their partner’s eyes and holding on to each other than paying attention to what was said around them. That was a no-go. When someone was truly in love, they couldn’t be enthralled.

Tearing her sight from the lovey-dovey couples, she studied the rest of the room. Akurn… hybrid… hybrid… Akurn. Damn, were those Princess Inanna’s only sons? Didn’t the woman have five of them? Where were the other two…?

Wait. There, at the edge of the room, was another tall man. While this one had the pale skin of an Akurn, his rich, black hair shone with blue highlights in the soft light. His sleek hair started with a widow’s peak and slid like silk to his shoulders. He leaned against the wall with his arms crossed and a scowl on his face.

And hoo-baby, what a blinding example of male beauty he was. His regal nose sat between high cheekbones, free of any bumps or curves. It was perfectly straight, like those centuries-old sculptures of Greek gods. His generously sensuous lips were framed by an unshaven jawline. His mouth was curved into a slight frown, as if he disagreed with everything going on around him.

Jelena’s heart raced. All she needed now was for the man to look up so she could see the color of his eyes. If they were the dual turquoise-gold that was prominent with the first generation of hybrids, it was a good chance he was one of Inanna’s sons.

The man jerked and focused on the roof where Shther sat.

The man couldn’t see her pet, could he?

She was sure the lizard had camouflaged his colors to blend in with the surrounding area. There wasn’t any way someone in that room could spot him.

As the man looked straight in Shther’s direction, she verified his eye color. Bingo! Dual turquoise-gold colored, egg-shaped wide eyes stared into the camera. She blinked three times in quick succession to signal her pet to come back.

Target found.

Chapter Two

~Zamush~

Zamush narrowed a stare at Damuzi, the co-regent of Azadi. Why was that asshole glaring at him? It wasn’t like he’d done anything to draw attention to himself, but the damn male never looked away. He just sat there with his arms crossed over his massive chest, his dual-colored brown-orange eyes examining Zamush as if he was something distasteful.

Fuck. He’d be damned if he sat there for one more minute listening to this bullshit. Everyone around the table was consumed with finding the missing women the Akurns had created as a lure to him and his brothers. As far as he was concerned, it had all the makings of a convoluted scheme those aliens had to use those women to blackmail Mother, Princess Inanna. The intent was to make her go back to that planet and marry her half-brother, sub-Prince Murduk, so he could solidify his claim to the throne.

Finding those sisters, in his opinion, wasn’t necessary. Three of those hybrids had been found and had fallen in love with his younger brothers. They’d overcome the Akurn programming and made that threat moot, thank you very much.

It was nice his brothers found someone to share their lives with, but neither he nor his eldest brother, Raiden, would be susceptible to anything the Akurns had dreamed up when they’d created those women. He and Raiden were genetically different from their brothers. No way could those alien scientists plan for that.

Across from him, Damuzi uncrossed his arms and rested his chin on his clenched fist. “You remind me of someone.”

The man’s booming voice stopped the conversation between Edinni and Raiden about what technological tools they could share for continuing the search.

Zamush made sure his body language remained relaxed, as if he didn’t have a care in the world. “Oh? You don’t say.” He doubted it was someone Damuzi was fond of.

“Yeah, it’s eluding me now. But don’t worry. It’ll come to me soon enough.” A sardonic smile creased his craggy face.

“I assure you, I’m not worried.” Zamush glanced around the table. Here was his chance to take advantage of the conversation’s lull. “If you’ll excuse me—” He pushed away from the wall. ”—I have an urgent matter elsewhere.”
