Have you entered Jump Space yet?

No. I expect it won’t be long now.

I am concerned that once you do, it will be difficult for us to communicate.

Zamush frowned. Agreed.

He took off his outer coat and laid it across the foot of the bed. Sitting next to it, he took off his boots. There was time to take a quick meditative nap before seeking Abiditan for a quick draw of blood. The Akurn’s rich essence should hold him for quite some time. As for Jelena, he’d take her blood when he had time to savor the experience. Preferably in the throes of passion. He wiped his palm down his face to stop his mind from wandering. He exhaled a harsh breath. Now wasn’t the time to fantasize about making love to Jelena while he talked to his brother.

I’ll open our pathway when we’re ready to make the Jump. That way, we’ll know if we can still communicate. How is everything there?

Michael is going to bring Jordyn here to Azadi to meet her sisters and the rest of the family this afternoon. Things on Earth are getting worse. The human governments can’t control their population. Power, transportation, and communications are sporadic. Fortunately, hostilities are at a standstill, and all-out war has been averted. I can’t imagine how the humans will react when the Akurns show up.

Has anyone subverted the signal the Akurns used to disrupt everything?

Several of the Azadi technicians have been scrambling to do just that. We hope when Michael arrives, he’ll be able to figure it out. With him and Jordyn bonding, their psychic powers have increased, and we’re hoping they can cut off the signal. Once the power is restored on Earth, we can concentrate on relieving the panicked population.

Zamush hadn’t heard that tone of resignation from Raiden before. Under normal circumstances, his elder brother had enough foresight to see a way around any threatening position. Have you not foreseen a way through this?

The pause was telling. No. I’m only getting unhelpful vision snippets. I know I’m missing something important, but I can’t determine what it is.

Zamush didn’t have to be there to see the look of frustration on his brother’s face. He felt it through their link. What aren’t you telling me?

Another pause. I won’t go into detail, but I feel as if someone is toying with me. Not allowing me to see what I need to until they deem it appropriate.

Someone is threatening you? His chest tightened. Never in his wildest dreams would anyone have enough power to make his brother feel helpless. If Zamush hadn’t been hurtling through space at an unimaginable speed, he’d drop everything and go back to help. Not that Raiden would ask. He swore the stubborn ass believed he was omnipotent sometimes. Zamush was one of the few who knew his brother was as “human” as the rest of them. No matter how much power he wielded.

No. I don’t think I’m being threatened. The nearest I can surmise is that I’m being put on hold.

What in the hell does that mean?

Raiden’s smile came through their telepathic link. I think I’m being put in my place. I suspect I know who it is, but I can’t be sure. For now.

So, you don’t feel you’re in danger?

The only danger I face is a dose of humility.

Zamush chuckled. He loved his brother’s dry wit. Especially when self-directed. Have you discussed this with the others?

I have not, nor will I. If I deem things are spiraling out of control, I’ll discuss it with them.

Zamush sent his brother his own taste of amusement. I can understand your hesitancy in allowing them to see you vulnerable. But don’t let that stop you from asking if you need them. I’ll not be there to assist you.

I appreciate your concern. However, you have a Herculean task ahead of you. If you and your new companions can rescue the WOTA leader from execution, it will cause the Akurns their own chaos. Their focus will be on their planet while we clean up their mess on ours. A mental chuckle. And while you’re at it, capture and subdue our buttnutty uncle while you’re at it.

Buttnutty? Have you been hanging around Pete again? If I didn’t know any better, I’d swear he’s rubbing off on you.

You are free to consider that outlandish assumption at your earliest convenience.

Zamush chuckled. So that was a “yes”.

Ah, we seem to have an unexpected visitor coming through the main Transkip here in Azadi. Raiden’s no-nonsense tone was back. I’d better intervene before dire consequences come as a result. Take care, Z. We have much to discuss when you return.

Chapter Five

The last thing Zamush wanted to do was create a Dreamwalk with anyone. Especially with a woman he was trying to get to know better. He ignored the twinge of guilt at how he scoffed at his brother Ben when the man spent so much time with Julienne in the dream world. Back then, he had a hard time understanding why Ben didn’t woo the woman in the real world instead. Traipsing around in a make-believe world seemed the coward’s way out.

Well, look who was the coward now.
