Because I could afford for her to do that, if she wanted, and I certainly didn’t care as long as she didn’t paint the whole thing pink.

“The kitchen is huge.” Cody poked his head out into the living room. “You’ve gotta come see it.”

I crossed the living room and stepped onto the marble floor, my eyebrows lifting. “You’re not kidding. Scott’s going to have kitchen envy.”

Cody snickered. “He really is. This is the size of his living room. There’s seating at the island and space for an actual table.”

“The fact that you have an island is impressive.”

Greg grinned at us from the glass-topped table where he was sitting. “The floors are heated as well.”

I started to laugh. “You’re joking? I didn’t know people really did that.”

“No joke. Radiant heat. It’s great in the winter—you can go barefoot and not have any trouble.” Greg’s smile was tight.

“Hear that, Cody?” I closed the distance between us so I could elbow him in the side. “You can be barefoot in the kitchen and your toesies will stay toasty.”

“You’re such an idiot.” Cody shook his head. “Let’s go up.”

“The next floor is the owner’s suite. The floor above that has two additional bedrooms and a sitting area.” Greg set his cell phone down on the table. “Let me know if you have questions.”

I followed Cody as he breezed through looking at the rest of the house. There were touches that bordered on ridiculous as far as I was concerned. Cody didn’t disagree. At the same time, it wasn’t like it was bad to have a three-sided gas fire that separated the bedroom portion of the owner’s suite from a large sitting area. Or the his and hers walk-in closets that could easily be bedrooms on their own.

Upstairs, the rooms were smaller but no less luxurious. And the bathroom that joined them was more than ample for any guests.

Cody sank onto one of the arm chairs in the top floor sitting area. “What do you think?”

“It’s nice.” I perched on the edge of the sofa and looked around. “It’s a lot of room.”

He blew out a breath. “Too much? I don’t have to get a house. I could get a condo on the water like Tristan. Maybe that’s the smarter choice.”

I watched Cody reach around and massage his neck. Something in his expression made it clear he didn’t want a condo like Tristan. “You want a house, though, right?”

“I mean, yeah. I like the idea of having a place to bring a wife and start a family. You’re not the only one who feels like ‘eventually’ is creeping up on you faster than you realized.” Cody frowned. “Although maybe I should wait until I have someone before buying. What if she hates it?”

“I don’t know anyone who could hate this place. Unless she’s completely anti-townhouse. But then she’s probably not going to be the right woman for you. You’re as rooted in Old Town as the rest of us. It’s not like you want to move out to the suburbs and get a mini-mansion on one and a half acres, right?”

Cody grimaced. “No. I don’t want to spend fifteen or twenty hours commuting each week just so I can dedicate my weekends to lawn mowing.”

“To be fair, you can hire a landscaping company to handle the mowing.” I grinned. “But I get your point. And it makes mine. You’re not going to marry someone who doesn’t love living here. Or at least is willing to. So if you like this place, I’d say you should buy it.”

“Do you think Megan would like it?”

My eyebrows lifted, and I waited until Cody met my gaze. “Is there something I should know about you and my sister?”

He shook his head. “Not yet. Maybe not ever. I don’t think she thinks about me like that at all. But I wouldn’t mind it if she did. Would you?”

I had to fight to keep my jaw from dropping. “I can’t say I’ve ever given it any thought.”

“Maybe you could. And let me know what you come up with.” Cody stood and started back toward the stairs. “I’m gonna go talk to Greg about making an offer on this place.”

I watched Cody leave but couldn’t quite get my legs to follow. Cody and Megan? It wasn’t a pairing I would ever have made. Although there was no reason not to. Cody was great. Megan deserved someone great.

Except when I tried to picture my baby sister with a husband and kids, I couldn’t quite get there.

I sighed and sagged back into the couch. Why did relationships have to be so complicated? First this mess with Kayla that had been going on for close to two weeks. And now Cody and Megan?

There was part of me—a big part—that wanted to rewind to the start of the year and do it over.
