“It’s not easy to hide,” he said. “They are looking for it now. New Year’s Eve is going to be tough with us both there. Then to have to keep our distance on top of it.”

She sighed. “I know. I was thinking about that. Give me a few days, but maybe we can just go together. Like not announce it or anything, but just show up and be like ‘What, you guys didn’t know? How could you not know?’”

He grinned. “I like how you are thinking. What made you decide?”

“Just being there today and seeing everyone together. It was obvious most knew what was going on in terms of you and me. I don’t like to lie and it feels that way when they are in your face with it.”

He laughed. “I know that feeling. We aren’t lying though.”

“Lawyer talk. We aren’t admitting anything either. My point is, we’ve been dating now for three months. Your siblings know and my parents and Jax know. You’ve met them. I don’t want your parents mad at you.”

“Well, that is a possibility.”

He’d been thinking about this more for the past month. Though he knew his reasons for keeping it quiet were the right ones, his mother wasn’t going to be too happy with him when she found out.

The longer it went on, the worse she’d be.

If they did end up letting the Fierces know next week, he wanted to give his parents the heads up first.

“Now I feel horrible,” she said. “If you tell your parents, can they keep it a secret and not say anything until we do?” she asked.

“For a short period,” he said. “It’s not like my mother sees Diane or Carolyn much. With the holidays, everyone is busy.”

“If you want to tell your parents tomorrow, you can,” she said. “I think on New Year’s Eve we just make it public. Not like an announcement or anything, but just act like it’s been a thing for months and how could they not know? It’s not as if they asked me. They’ve never brought your name up with mine in terms of saying you’d be a good fit for me. Just always saying what a great guy you are.”

“I am a great guy,” he said. “And I’m on board with that plan if you are. I just don’t want you to feel pressured because of today.”

“I don’t. I mean I do, but not like you think. I believe it’s the right time and the right thing to do.”

“Think about it the rest of the night and decide before I go home tomorrow,” he said.

“I can do that,” she said. “But I’m sure I won’t change my mind.”

“You can if you want,” he said. “Now what are you cooking for dinner? Anything I can do to help? There are a ton of Christmas movies we can watch if you’re game.”

“Comedies only,” she said. “I like to laugh at them. The raunchy ones that I can’t watch with Eli around.”

“Those are the best,” he said. “And on my list.”

Tonight might be one of the best Christmas Eves he’d had in his adult life and he was glad he could give it to her too.

Taking That Step

“I’m sorry you have to leave,” Roni said the next morning.

“Don’t worry about it,” he said. “It would raise too many questions on why I was here when Jeff and Eli showed up.”

“I know. Soon, right? We are taking that step. Or those steps.”

He leaned in and gave her a light kiss. “We are,” he said.

She’d thought it over in bed last night before she fell asleep and realized that she was ready for Trent to tell his parents about their relationship. That she did want to move forward, but just not letting Eli know right yet.

Since Trent was the first man she’d dated since her split with Jeff, she wasn’t sure how her son would feel about it. It was best to get past the holidays in her mind before they crossed that bridge.

But they’d be laying the bricks for everyone else to know next week after the New Year’s Eve party. Talk about a coming out.
