“It could happen,” Grant said. “At least in Gabe and Elise’s situation. We know those two are butting heads, so one of those sparks is going to ignite. It has to.”

“That doesn’t help us with Trent though,” she said.

“No,” Grant said. “It doesn’t. So we’ll put our heads together and try something else. But don’t think about it tonight.”

“I think you’re right,” she said. “We’ve got to take our successes where we can.”

Because right now they were failing on the two in progress.

Support For The Day

Roni pulled into the driveway at Carolyn Fierce’s house on Christmas Eve. She’d heard they rotated holidays or whatever house seemed to be more convenient. She was guessing since Carolyn just got two new grandchildren it was best to have the party here so that her kids felt comfortable putting their kids down for naps.

There were lots of cars even though it was early, but since it was a Sunday she figured earlier was better at this point.

It was her first big party with everyone around, and though she’d met a lot of the family that worked for Fierce Engineering, she hadn’t met all the children. She’d seen enough pictures and was sure she could figure them out.

One hour, she’d told herself. That was all she’d be staying. Eli was at Jeff’s and she’d get him for six hours tomorrow. Jeff was dropping him off at her house at noon, then he’d open gifts, they’d go to her parents and she’d bring him back to Jeff’s by six.

Tonight though, it was just her and Trent. She was glad he suggested it, as it would have been the very first Christmas Eve she’d ever been alone. Prior to moving here, she was still in her parents’ house. She hadn’t even had to say a word about it to Trent. It was as if he knew and said he’d like to be with her.

She rang the doorbell and it was immediately opened by Jade Fierce-James, who had a baby in her arms.

“Hi, Roni,” Jade said. “Are you ready for this?”

She was glad she knew what was going on now as she’d been picking up on all the sly remarks her way in regards to Trent.

She was going to play dumb though.

“I am,” she said. Then she leaned in to see Ainsley snuggled in Jade’s arms wide awake and looking around. “She’s beautiful. I remember when Eli was that tiny. They grow so quickly.”

“They do,” Jade said. “She just got up from her nap and I’m surprised she’s not screaming for her bottle. She’s a loud one. I think she takes after her father. You can put your coat in my father’s office if you’d like. I’d take it and you can bring the baby if you want?”

“I’ll do it,” she said. Though she wouldn’t mind getting her hands on a baby again, it was best to let it go. She knew there’d be lots of kids here too. How could there not? Even though this was a day where people just came in and visited and then left, it sounded as if most of the Fierces’ kids were here for the day.

Trent had told her that Cody and Raina went to Greenville with Ryder, Marissa, and their children on Friday though to be with Cody and Marissa’s parents for the holiday. They’d be back tomorrow afternoon, so she wouldn’t see Raina today, but there was a good chance she’d meet Jonah.

She hung her coat up on the rack that they must bring out for these events and then followed Jade into the back of the house. She could have found her way; there were a ton of voices.

“Look who we’ve got here,” Jade said loudly.

Lots of heads turned and she wanted to snarl over that but knew how Jade was and just laughed with her. Again, she was glad she was prepared for this.

“Hello,” Carolyn said, rushing over. Diane was right behind her. “We are so glad you could make it.”

“Thank you for inviting me,” she said.

“Always,” Carolyn said. “You’re part of the Fierce work family now.”

She found that odd because she didn’t think she was. It’s not as if all their employees were invited to these things. She knew, as she’d talked to Megan about it last week.

With Trent’s siblings knowing about her relationship with Trent, both Megan and Raina had found a reason to call her and chat. She found it was more like support for today.

“It’s a nice feeling,” she said.

“Let us introduce you around to everyone,” Diane said. “Though I think you might know most of the people here.”
