Diane hung up the phone after that and turned to her husband. “Nothing?” Grant asked.

“Nope. Why is this one taking so long? It’s not even like they are playing hard to get as much as they are clueless. Trent has been in the building now for almost five months. We should have seen some kind of progress.”

“I don’t know what to tell you,” Grant said. “We are all busy too. Not everyone is retired.”

“Very funny,” she said. “Carolyn gets a pass as she’s been spending time with Ainsley and Nate, not to mention all the other kids.”

“As have you,” Grant said. “And the holiday today and more coming up. We’ll see Roni on Christmas Eve. We can figure out a way to tag team her there.”

“Are you asking Trent to come?” she asked.

“Probably not wise. That will be too obvious. But Trent is invited to the New Year’s Eve party and so is Roni. We just have to assure they both show up.”

“Alright,” she said. “That isn’t too far away. On Christmas Eve we can work on Gabe and Elise. Anything there to report?”

“Sorry. That one is still new too, but they both will be invited and I know Richard will push for Elise to come. He already said that. Royce and Chloe have got a lot going on with Willow’s birth a few weeks ago. I doubt they will be at any big parties, but who knows?”

“We need to get Chloe on board to help with Elise,” she said.

“I haven’t had a chance to bring it up and she’s busy enjoying her daughter.”

“I know,” she said. “Oh, looks like Jolene is calling. Wonder what this is about. Hi, Jolene.”

“Hang on and let me get Carolyn on the call too,” her other sister-in-law said.

Diane waited and they heard Carolyn come on the call, then say, “Do you have news for us, Jolene? Don’t tell me Faith is engaged on Thanksgiving?”

“No,” Jolene said. “Not likely. I feel like that one is coming soon but have dialed it back some.”

“You dialing it back,” Diane said, laughing. “Never. Must be you are lining up your next target.”

“Well, sometimes it’s hard to step back,” Jolene said. “So I am trying to figure things out. Got lots of employees available.”

She laughed. “If you want to know how we are doing here, we are still batting zero. I just got off the phone with Trent’s mother and it seems like no one is biting.”

“You need to push harder,” Jolene said.

“We are pushing,” Carolyn said. “But Roni hasn’t had it easy so she is the one we are tiptoeing around.”

They’d filled Jolene in on both of their potential setups so far. “Aimee was like that too. I think it’s hard being a single mother. If you can get those two in the same space more it might help. Brody was around Aimee enough that they ended up doing most of the work themselves.”

“You only admit that now because they are happily married with three kids,” she said. “For years it was all about how he was your first setup.”

“I’ve softened,” Jolene said. “I’ve got myself lots of grandchildren to keep me busy now.”

“The same with us,” Carolyn said. “And most everyone knows what we are up to. It hurts us.”

“Or helps you,” Jolene said. “Think of it this way. Trent knows he’s locked into the radar. He might try to make a move himself before you guys can say you did it. Didn’t you say Chloe did that? So did Faith and Sawyer once they figured it out. Maybe that’s the new thing. We need to learn to pivot.”

“I don’t know about that,” she said.

“Think about it. Either way, ladies, get to work and keep me posted.”

“Will do,” Carolyn said.

Diane hung up the phone and turned to her husband. “What did Jolene have to say?”

“She thinks everyone is expecting the setups now and we need to pivot and let it work in our favor. That maybe they will do the work for us.”
