Just great. “Did Dad want to know how you found out about it?”

“No,” Eli asked. “He never asks me questions, but I told him that I saw it on my iPad and that Jimmy’s older brother tries to do it.”

Guess she got away there and wasn’t sure why she cared. She just wasn’t in the mood to deal with Jeff, especially since the past few weeks had been quiet.

Honestly though, if Eli said the name Trent, she was positive her ex would think it was a school friend of Eli’s and not a potential boyfriend of hers.

Janine rushedup the stairs but went around the corner rather than into her office.

She hated that she got on a chair and loosened a light in the conference room so that it flickered and gave her an excuse to contact Roni. Guess she was lucky that the lights were out in the spare office too so it didn’t look as if she staged this.

She pulled her phone out and sent a text to Carolyn. The two women had stopped in earlier to bring bags of candy to some of the people in the office. Roni was one, she knew, because they’d stopped in to see her and gave Janine a nudge to go talk to Roni.

She also knew about Eli’s classroom party because Roni had told the Fierces.

If she thought it was sneaky to be doing this behind her boss’s back, she’d never let anyone know. It was way too much fun.

Her phone rang in her hand. “Did you get anywhere?” Carolyn asked.

“It was perfect timing. Roni had Eli with her and they are both coming up soon. I invited him to come and get some candy from my desk. Good thing I’ve had it there for a few weeks.”

“Always be prepared,” Carolyn said. “How was Roni? Did you drop any hints about Trent or bring his name up?”

“I did. I always do. Just something about him being smart in school and that Jami always said Trent went after those that needed help. It’s like she didn’t bite. I don’t get it.”

“She will,” Carolyn said. “I’m sure she’s playing coy. Eli was there anyway, so that could be part of it.”

“I’ll take your word for it. I’ll text you after their visit and give you an update on how it goes. Trent is in his office and I’ll have to figure out a way to get him out to see Roni and Eli.”

“You’ll think of something,” Carolyn said.

“Yep,” she said. “I’m fast on my feet.”

She put her cell phone back in her pocket and went to work while she tried to figure out how to get her boss to come out and talk to the woman everyone wanted him to go on a date with.

Matchmaking Scheme

Trent tossed his phone on the desk. Roni had just texted him that she’d be up with Eli soon. That Janine had stopped down to let her know about some lights that weren’t working.

Then Roni mentioned how Janine was dropping his name on how wonderful he was and that Roni knew it was all true.

He laughed over that.

He also felt bad that no one knew he was dating Roni, but if she wanted to keep it quiet from Eli, it was best to do the same at work.

He wasn’t sure he wanted the Fierces to know just yet and there was also the guilt there that he wasn’t letting Roni in on the fact she was part of the matchmaking scheme.

He was pretty sure he was going to have to let her know soon. He didn’t feel right keeping her in the dark. Maybe this week when he saw her they could talk about it.

For now though, he had to keep it professional and play it off.

If it wasn’t for the fact that Janine was a friendly talkative person, he might think she was in on what was going on with the Fierces.

But since he was the one that loosened the lights in the empty office to have a reason to go see Roni, he had to just keep things to himself for now.
