That was what she was starting to understand about him. And in doing so, it just made it even harder for her to hold back when she had with so many others in her life.

Plan In Motion

Trent had no idea he was going to be having dinner with Roni when he came back into the building to lock up for the night.

He’d been flying high on his win, met with his clients to congratulate them and tell them it all went as planned. They got exactly what they asked for.

This weekend, he was going to start to plan out things for the office but not jump too soon. Not yet.

One big win didn’t mean he’d get another in a few months. A few a year with that seven-figure fee though was going to go a long way.

Not just for his firm but for him personally.

He hadn’t lied to Roni though. He didn’t want to be alone to celebrate.

His brother was working. He could have gone to the gym to tell him, but why bother him?

His father would have had a beer with him. No doubt there.

Instead, he saw the light on and guessed that Roni was alone.

“It sucks not having control,” she said as she started to eat.

He didn’t think he’d get a lot of personal information out of Roni, but he’d take anything he could.

And since his mother was here earlier, he started to think there was a plan in motion and he needed to take that first step before Roni knew what was going on.

He was positive she didn’t, but if she found out, she would be the type to step back on principle, he was guessing.

The control factor in her life.

He understood it more than most.

“It does,” he said. “You don’t feel that way in your job, correct?”

“Not at all,” she said. She almost looked relieved that he was starting with that. “The Fierces are great people. But you know that.”

“They are,” he said. “I’ve known them for years. I met them first when Raina started to date Cody. Then more with Jonah and Megan.”

“I’ve heard all about it,” she said.

He figured. And she was smart enough to know or catch on at some point that she might be part of their plan. Just not yet.

“I think everyone has,” he said. “Your last job, you said you didn’t like being the boss?”

“It’s not that,” she said. “I have no problem running an office and talking with people. Even assigning work. But I had three assistants under me. They also did work for the realtors directly. There were no lines over who they should go to for what. When people are running everywhere, they get mixed directions.”

“Ahhh,” he said. “So if one person gets away with something and another doesn’t, it’s drama induced.”

“Exactly,” she said. “I don’t do well with drama at times. I mean we all have it, but I try to avoid it in my job.”

“Because you’ve got enough in your personal life?”

He figured a few little breadcrumbs wouldn’t hurt now and again. They were both eating as they talked.

She finished chewing and said, “You want to know more about my ‘years’ comment?”
