“You know,”Drake said after Royce left the space. It was just him, Ryder and their fathers. “You guys aren’t nearly as sly as you think you are.”

“Who says we are trying to be sly?” his father asked. “But what are you talking about specifically?”

“Setting up Trent with Roni,” Ryder said. “Anyone can see what is going on. You talked them both up to the other. Trent is no idiot. He knows what you are doing. Roni, on the other hand, does she even know what your hobby is?”

“She has to know,” Drake said. “She has flowcharts. The only other person who has things like that is Kara. My wife is just as anal.”

“Roni is a nice young woman,” Uncle Grant said. “Your mother and aunt had her as a student.”

“And now it all falls in place,” Drake said. “How the hell do you find them? Or this one fell in your lap. Admit it. Don’t try to play it off like Aunt Jolene and Uncle Gavin where you find the people first.”

He watched his father and uncle look at each other. “Fine, we won’t tell you that. Roni applied for the job and we interviewed her. We really liked her. She told us that she had your mother and aunt as teachers. We went home and asked them about her,” his father said.

“Because Mom would remember Roni from third grade or whatever grade she was teaching back then and the same with Aunt Diane in middle school English?”

“They did remember her,” Uncle Grant said. “But you know as well as I do that isn’t what we would have gone off of to hire someone.”

“Of course not,” he said. “But you had to have found out more to get to this point that you think they’d be perfect for each other. Fill us in. How can they work out?”

“We don’t know those things for certain,” his father said. “It’s just in our gut.”

“Your gut,” Ryder said, laughing. “That’s a good one.”

“Hey, we are batting a thousand so don’t knock it. And no one has to fall for it. It’s their choice.”

“Whatever you say,” Drake said. “Everyone falls for it somehow. I just can’t figure out if you guys are the luckiest people on the face of this earth or you should start another business. Maybe an online matchmaking site.”

“Don’t give them any ideas,” Ryder said.

The four of them laughed and left after that. It was going to be Trent’s problem to figure out. For now, he wasn’t complaining about the great wife he had thanks to being set up by his parents.

Looking In The Mirror

“Can I go play in the hall with my car?” Eli asked a month later.

Roni didn’t want to bring Eli to work with her but didn’t have much of a choice today. Their sitter had the stomach bug over the weekend and just started to feel better today. She wanted one more day to get her strength up.

Her father was out of town for work and her mother had meetings this morning but would be picking up Eli at noon.

She’d never ask Jax because her brother was just way too busy.

That meant she had to bring Eli with her for a few hours or take the morning off.

She’d texted both Grant and Garrett last night when she found out and explained the situation. They were quick to say she could do what worked for her. Stay home or bring Eli in. They were good with either decision.

She weighed it in her mind. She kept her life private and not many knew she had a son. Not unless they came back past her desk and saw the pictures. And very few had any reason to do that.

Her desk was set back and it had a higher shelf on it that didn’t allow people to see the pictures she had under it. Most of it was for privacy.

“It’s too busy right now,” she said. “People are coming in and out and you’ll be in the way. If we were on another floor then I’d say yes. I’m sorry, buddy. I know you’re bored.”

“It’s fine,” Eli said. “I can drive it around here.”

Which was annoying her, but she wouldn’t say anything because he was six and she knew this was the last thing he wanted to do.

She didn’t like his nose in an electronic device all the time and he’d already spent two hours playing games. She finally told him to put it away when he started to shout about how bad he was doing.
