Not To Rush

“How is work going?” Jax asked her a few days later. It was her brother’s birthday and their mother liked to always have dinner on their actual day.

Roni wished that Eli could be here, but he was with Jeff and it’s not like she had much of a choice. To make up for it, she’d asked her brother to come over this weekend for pizza if he wasn’t busy since Eli wanted to see him.

Her brother was close with his only nephew and she knew Jax enjoyed the time he spent with them.

“It’s great,” she said. “I’d say the building might be half full. There is still plenty of space unoccupied but a lot of businesses under contract. I shouldn’t say anything, but I know you guys won’t say much.”

“What?” her mother asked.

“They are talking about another building not that far away. Maybe a mile. They would do the same thing there as they did the first building.”

“That’s exciting,” her mother said. “Will you be part of that? Will you have to be at that building too or will they hire another person there like you are doing?”

“Grant and Garrett told me to start I’ll be doing it at both businesses if they go through with it. They won’t be ready to put anyone in there yet. I think by the time they are ready to start putting people in a new building, the first one will be close to filled.”

“They still have space not allotted?” her father asked.

“They have most of it under contract or in negotiations. It’s getting the work done more than anything. Next week the community room should be completed too. I’m excited about that.”

“You always have great ideas,” Jax said. “Don’t sell yourself short because Jeff knocked you down at times.”

Roni frowned. She didn’t want to be reminded of the lowest parts of her life. Where she learned to be more guarded and have trust issues.

She’d never been that way before and it was so hard to get back to who she used to be.

She’d realized that she didn’t love Jeff enough to marry him. Not to spend the rest of her life with him. That he made her change as a person to one she didn’t like or felt she could live with.

They were young when she got pregnant. Hadn’t dated long. They got along, but it wasn’t enough in her eyes.

She’d done what she thought was the best decision.

She’d told Jeff she wasn’t ready for marriage and there was no rush. Lots of people had babies without being married. She needed to think it through more before she committed to someone or something she wasn’t one hundred percent positive about.

Even her parents weren’t upset over that.

But not Jeff. He wasn’t happy but finally conceded and they moved in together while she was pregnant. It didn’t take long for them to both realize they got on each other's nerves.

But she was trying to make it work.

It didn’t. It couldn’t.

Jeff just changed.

He wanted to control everything and make all the decisions.

He wasn’t the man she started to date and maybe living together opened her eyes more.

They were fighting all the time and she was miserable.

He kept blaming it all on her because she didn’t want to get married in the first place.

Best decision of her life not to rush.

But Jeff still made her life difficult.
