“Are you ready to talk?” he asked.

“Not really. It’s not the place,” she said. “And I’ve got Eli for a few days too.”

He nodded his head at her and she felt bad. “I’m sorry about everything,” he said.

“I know,” she said. “I’m sorry too. We need to talk it out. But again, not the place to do it.”

Trent left her office after that. The hurt was still on his face, but she had work to catch up on and she figured he was busy too.

But an hour later, Diane walked in with Carolyn and said, “How is Eli doing?”

Roni should have figured they’d know what was going on. She had to call in for the day off yesterday and explain what happened.

“He’s good,” she said. “Better than he was.”

“That poor baby,” Diane said. “Going to the ER isn’t fun. I’ve had my fair share of that with three boys.”

“The same here,” Carolyn said. “Lots of stitches in my house. Noah broke two fingers wrestling with Drake once.”

“Ryder was my wild child,” Diane said. “Things happen. I hope you didn’t have to go alone?”

She knew they were fishing right now. “Trent was with me.”

“That’s wonderful,” Diane said. “He’d be good to keep you calm when you’d be upset.”

“It was an interesting day,” she said.

“Tell us all about it,” Carolyn said. “You look so sad.”

If she wasn’t teetering on an emotional rollercoaster she might not have burst into tears.

“Oh no,” Diane said. “We get it. It’s so hard to see your child hurt.”

“It is,” she said. “And then I got into a fight with Trent because my ex is a jerk.”

She caught the look between her bosses’ wives. “Tell us what happened,” Carolyn said. “Maybe we can help.”

“It’s fine,” she said. “We’ll figure it out.” She was sick of everyone saying they wanted to help.

“We’ve got to help,” Diane said. “Otherwise we’ll feel responsible. We’re the ones that set you up.”

Roni laughed. “No, you didn’t.”

“Please,” Carolyn said, waving her hand. “Everyone denies it, but it’s all about us.”

“Not always,” she said and watched as Diane left her office. “Where is she going?”

“I don’t know,” Carolyn said. “Come sit. Work can wait. Just talk to me. Sometimes it helps to get it off your chest.”

It’s not like she could argue with these women. They’d never let her.

And it might feel good to say some things out loud.

“Everything with Jeff is messy,” she said. “I’ve never done anything right and he lives to make my life difficult.”

“Do you think it’s because he wanted you and you didn’t want him back?”

“I have no idea. We weren’t meant for each other. If you love someone you listen to them. You don’t tell them what to do and not give them a voice or a choice. I never had either with Jeff.”
