"We’re noton the main road." She took a look through her window at thepretty stores and quaint buildings.

"We’re inNowhereville." He told her as he bit into his burrito.

"It's nice."

"Hmm." Hewas busy guzzling coffee and working out in his head what he’dtell her when they got there.

"You said youwanted to write?"

"Yeah." Hehated that he was lying to her but it was for her own good. Or so hehoped. "Inspiration and all that." He finished his burrito,took a swig of his coffee and started the engine.

Dawn was justbreaking over the horizon and the place was washed with severallovely colors. The place was indeed quaint and he was consideringstaying in one of the little inns and do some work. Killing two birdswith one stone.

He was grateful she’dgone back to sleep during the last leg of the journey. She onlyopened her eyes and stretched when he turned onto the narrow dirtroad that led to the simple log cabin.

The only light wasfrom what appeared to be a blazing fire going on in the hearth thatcould be seen through the dark blue curtains hanging from large baywindows.

Opening his door, hetook her case out and placed it on a patch of grass before comingaround to help her out.

“I love you.You know that, right?” He asked, placing his hands on hershoulders.

“Of course.”She stared at him with a frown. “What is it?”

“Just want youto remember that.” He turned her just as the man stepped out ofthe doorway and came towards them.

“What- “

“If youhurt her, I’m going to hire someone to kill you.” Calebtold Kenji grimly.

“Caleb- “

“I have to go.You’ll be fine.” Kissing her on the forehead he jumpedback into the vehicle and backed out.

“I’ll getthe case.”

“What’sgoing on?” She refused to move, even though the icy wind wascutting through her clothing.

“I want totalk.”

“I’m notgoing in there with you.”

Picking up the case,he started to take her hand when she jerked away from him. “Iknow you want to murder me, but I recommend you do so in the warmthof the cabin.”

She didn’t move, her arms folded at herwaist as she glared at him.

“There arebears and coyotes.” He grinned as her eyes darted around. “Justsaying.” He started off and was relieved when she followed him.

Chapter 14

“If you want tofreshen up, there’s a powder room off the kitchen.” Hetold her as he got ready to take her case up. “I know you hadbreakfast but I have soup if you’re interested.”

She didn’tanswer but stood in the middle of the living room and stared in frontof her.

“I’lltake this up and be right back. In case you’re thinking oftrying to find my keys and taking the car, I have the fob righthere.” He held it up for her to see. When she only stared anddidn’t answer, he sighed and left the room.

Chantelle was sofurious at the manipulation she was vibrating from it. Caleb of allpeople had betrayed her! He was definitely off the best friend list.She couldn’t resist the mesmerizing blaze of the fire andwandered over to sit on the rocker that had been placed in front ofit.
