I didn’t know what this 911 was, but I knew the bitter tang of fear when I tasted it and it bloomed from the female in my arms. Fear and shock and terror. We tore through the trees and headed toward the towering mountains in the distance. This world sparkled like the ceiling of the endless caves of Hunruin. I wanted to drive skyward and keep on flying up and up until I touched those crystal shards.

But I didn’t. I eased us back down amongst the towering pines. The moment her feet hit the ground she stumbled backward. Her eyes were filled with fear. I readied myself for her anger, knowing full well a female like her would never lower themselves for a hunter like me.

I wasn’t good enough.

I’d never be good enough.

Not for a woman like her.

“Did you hear what I said?” She stared up at me, her eyes wide, shining in the night. “Did you hear me?”

I opened my mouth to answer, only I didn’t get to.

“We have to run.”

I scowled. “What?”

She pointed in the opposite direction of where we’d come from. “They’re going to call the cops. You understand that right?” She froze, scowled, then shook her head. “Of course, you don’t understand.” She slapped her palm to her forehead. “You don’t get it. You don’t get any of this.”

“I get you.”

She froze, then slowly. “What?”

I stepped closer and slowly reached up brushing a strand of hair from her face. “I know you. Your pain, your terror. Your…disgust when you looked at him…that mortal.”

“Michael,” she whispered. “His name is Michael.”

A flare of anger ripped through me. His name didn’t belong on her lips. Only my name…

“They’re going to call other men…men with guns. Lots and lots of guns. They’re going to descend on this place like a plague of moths.” She stiffened, then winced. “Sorry. You know what I mean.”

I gave a nod.

She surged forward and grabbed my vest. “They’ll hunt you down.”

I opened my wings and spread them wide. “They’ll have to find me first.” Thoughts of home filled my mind. I could go there, take her with me. Then these men of 911 would never find us. If they did, they wouldn’t last long; not in my world.

“You want to run?” she murmured, looking up at me. “Then you’ll be running forever.”

“I’m strong and fast. I can do that far better than these 911 can.”

She shook her head as the skies rumbled and snarled. A bitter sweetness filled the air, making me lift my gaze skyward. Those crystal shards were being smothered. I lifted my gaze and was smacked in the goddamn eye. I flinched, snarled and was hit again. This time in the middle of my forehead.

“Rain,” she said. “Great…just fucking great.”

I flinched as those tiny unseen things fell from the sky to pummel me until a roar came only this time it came behind us. Violet swung around, but I was fixed on that invisible beast above, snarling and rumbling.

“Dregon.”

I swung around to find silver glinting from the trees. Beasts came, four…five, walking on all fours to flank our sides. The first beast was the biggest. Head down, powerful shoulders flexing as he moved.

“Is this…911?” I asked and glanced her way.

She scowled, then shook her head. “No, these are wolves, Dregon. They’re beasts.”

I exhaled nice and hard, nodding as I straightened. “Okay. That’s good.”

She just jerked a terrified stare my way. “Ah, I don’t think you understand.”
