He grabbed my arm, his grip cruel and bruising, dragging me toward him.

That was the wrong thing to do.

I unleashed a cry, desperately trying to pull out of his grasp as a low, dangerous snarl came from behind me and in the flutter of mammoth black wings Dregon descended terrifyingly. I was torn from Michael’s hold and driven backward while my Mothman surged forward.

“Get away from her NOW!” he roared and the entire forest shook.

Michael stumbled back and fell. I fought a tremor of amusement at the sight of him on his ass staring up at Dregon in terror.

But my smirk was short-lived as behind him came the cries of others that raced from the camping grounds. Flashlights cut through the trees heading toward us. Through the spindled branches came Damon and Monica.

Great…just fucking great.

I stumbled forward. “Dregon. Please…let’s go.”

“Dregon? DREGON?” Michael screamed, his cheeks blazing red in the night as he swung that sickening stare my way. “You know this THING?”

Rage seethed inside me. I couldn’t stop myself from reacting as Damon and Monica tore from the trees to the small clearing where we stood. I jerked a savage glare to Damon then back to the lying, cheating, pathetic piece of shit I’d pinned my hopes and dreams on. “This thing is more of a man than you’ll ever be.”

Dregon swung that midnight stare my way, seeming to grow bigger as his chest swelled with pride.

“He is more human, more caring…more everything than you could ever be.” I lifted my gaze to the others, to Damon and Monica and the small crowd that had come to stare.

My pulse boomed as I reached out, grasping his hand. “So just leave us alone.” I shifted my gaze to Michael. “Leave me alone.”

He shoved forward, pushing up from the ground as I took a step backward. “You can’t be fucking serious.” He tore his stare to my protector. “You’re leaving with him?”

I pulled Dregon with me, praying the massive male would take my lead because if he didn’t we’d find ourselves on the six o’clock news, and that alone was frightening. The glint of a tiny light shone. I swung my gaze toward the beam to find Monica with her phone in the air, recording everything.

Panic filled me. “D, we have to leave…now.”

My protector looked at Monica recording. I don’t know if he realised how bad this was, but the moment he glanced my way he saw the fear in my eyes. Thick, velvet wings closed around us and in an instant my feet lifted from the ground and we were gone, tearing away from the cries of those below.

Strong arms wrapped around me, lifting me until the cool night air whipped hair in my eyes. I turned my head at the sting, finding the glint of iPhones and cameras aimed at us as we left them far behind. Amongst the tiny flashes, Michael stepped forward, lifting his head to watch us as Dregon flapped mammoth wings, tearing us between massive pines and away from them.

But it was the rage in Michael’s stare that gripped me.

One filled with vengeance and wrath.

He wasn’t going to leave us.

I knew that now.

He wasn’t going to let this go.

No, instead he was going to make sure we were hunted…

Purely out of spite.

I tightened my grip around Dregon’s neck and turned away from those down below. There was no going back now. No undoing what we’d done. Now there was only running…and surviving, the only way we knew how.

Chapter 2

DREGON

I took us higher, driving my wings as hard as I could. Tree branches slapped my face, making me reach up and tilt hers. She pressed her face into my neck, her breath warm against my skin. Far below us came the faint cries of the mortals. “Call 911! CALL 911”

911.
