“I think a cute Pike peen to snuggle with would be awesome.”

“Why would you need that when you have the real thing?”

Holly and Merry both threw something at him, but only Merry’s ice cube got him in the chest. Holly’s napkin floated over Tara and hit the floor.

“Pick up after yourself, you heathen,” Pike said with a devilish smile.

Holly got up to get the napkin, muttering, “I thought getting a girlfriend would mellow you out, but you’re still a pill.”

“Coming from Nick’s baby sister. Ouch.”

Nick leaned against Noel’s shoulder and made a face. “Please don’t get one of those.”

“I won’t, but I want to stick a pin in it.”

Nick stood up. “I can’t watch. Pike, let’s get drinks.”

“Right behind you.” Pike leaned over and kissed Sally’s cheek, whispering something no one else could hear.

“What did he say?” Holly asked.

“He begged me not to get the stabbing one, too.”

Merry snickered as her brother and his friend headed to the bar to join Anthony.

“Oh, he’s cute!” Holly said, pointing over Merry’s shoulder. “What is your guy supposed to be wearing?”

Merry turned to inspect the man in question, shaking her head. “Blue button-down shirt.”

“All right, not him…” Holly scanned the crowd and stopped, her face twisting like she’d smelled burning fruitcake. “Oh no.”

“What?” Merry turned, craning her neck to see over Noel and Sally, searching the faces until she landed on Trip Douglas.

In a baby-blue button-down.

“What’s wrong?” Noel asked.

The rest of the table turned as Holly hissed, “It’s Trip. He’s her date.”

Tara gagged. “Ew.”

Noel groaned. “Can we not ew someone I used to sleep with?”

“Why did you have to remind us?” Holly looked a little green and Merry would have laughed if she wasn’t so disappointed. She’d really imagined a whole Tom Hanks/Meg Ryan moment where Clark walked in and their eyes met across the room. He’d cross it slowly, as romantic music played above their heads, and he’d stop in front of her, holding out his hand.

“I hoped it was you.”

“Merry, what are you going to do?” Tara whispered loudly.

Sally picked up her drink, her eyebrows raised. “I’d put my coat back on and duck out of here.”

“I’m with Sally,” Noel said.

“No, I’m not going to do that. He may have been a jerk in the past, but he is still a human being.”

Holly smirked. “Debatable.”

Merry stood up with a resigned sigh. “I’m going to say hello, thank him for his time, and then come back to the table and drink. Please have three shots waiting for me upon my return.”
