“Along a curvy creek without a paddle. Sorry to crash the party.”

“The more the merrier,” Pike said, taking another suck of his straw. “I have no idea why I hated on delicious drinks like this for so long. I could down a dozen.”

“And fall flat on your face, you lightweight. Speaking of which, I need another.” Anthony snapped his fingers in Clark’s direction. “Clark, you want a drink? What’s your poison?”

“I’ll take a whiskey. Thanks.” His phone buzzed and he checked the message.

Don’t let my brother bully you. I’ll be waiting.

Nick leaned over and whispered something to Anthony, who grinned. “Coming right up.”

Clark noticed Nick and Pike exchanging sheepish looks. “What did I miss?”

Nick chuckled. “If Anthony offers to buy you a drink, it means he thinks you’re good people and he’s about to get you very, very drunk.”

“I can’t, I gotta drive.”

“Eh, if you get shit-faced, we’ll call my sister to come get us,” Nick said.

Pike finished off his drink and burped. “Can she come get me too?”

“What happened to Sally?”

“She’s pissed at me over something stupid.”

Nick shook his head. “If she’s angry with you, just admit you’re wrong and apologize.”

“What if I’m not wrong?” Pike asked.

“Clark, back me up here,” Nick said. “He’s wrong.”

Clark wasn’t sure how to respond, especially when Pike didn’t seem in any mood to take advice from him.

“I don’t know his relationship, so…”

“Yeah, but I know you’ve pissed Merry off at least once! What did you do to get back into my sister’s good graces?”

“Groveled. Gave her a pie. Groveled some more.”

Nick leaned forward, pointing at Clark. “See, this is a man who understands women.” Nick’s smile dissolved swiftly into an eerie expression. “But if you hurt her again, I’ll take you to the top of Soldier Mountain and leave you there for the wolves.”

Clark stared at Nick, his stomach churning.

Nick burst out laughing. “You should see your face. I’m just kidding, man.”

“One Hold Onto Your Sleighbells for Clark.” Clark jumped when Anthony set a tall glass of green liquid in front of him.

“Did you make sure they put that something extra in it?” Nick asked, winking at Anthony.

“Oh yeah. He’s going to love it.”

Clark eyed the drink warily. “I thought you were getting me a whiskey?”

“There’s whiskey in there,” Anthony said.

“I’m a little worried you’re trying to poison me.”

Pike snorted. “Eh, we’d never do that. If we were going to kill ya, we’d make it look like an accident.”
