“Thank you for offering, but I think we both know where that would lead and it would feel odd here. I will take a kiss though.”

I sat next to her on the bed and took her face in my hands. I touched her lips lightly with my own moving from side to side. She opened to me as she tipped her chin up. I delved into her mouth wanting to be as close to her as I could get. Her hands were against my chest, and she had to feel how fast my heart was beating. Every time we touched, she had the same effect on me. I could not get enough. Our tongues twirled with each other playing a dance. She was perfect, and for now, she was saying she was mine. When the kiss ended, I stood and rearranged myself, and she laughed.

“I should go before I get into trouble with your cousins.”

“They are lovely, aren’t they? The boys have always looked out for me. I tried to look out for them when they were younger and tell them which girls to go out with. They never listened though.”

“Yep. Us boys can be knuckleheads and need to learn the hard way till we find something good. I’ll be back tomorrow if that’s okay. Then I’m moving in with Jack till I find a place. I have someone getting some new clothes for me as well as a lot of mine are ready for the dumpster.”

“I love shopping. When you get back, I’ll go with you.”

“I’d like that, and if you decide to go to Ireland, I’ll buy you a beautiful dress to wear at the wedding.”

“You don’t need to do that and I might consider it bribery.”

“I will use any means I can to make you stay around me longer. I would like to get you something anyway. It will be my way of making up for what happened with the fire.”

“That wasn’t your fault, but I will take your offer.” She blew me a kiss. “Now go so I can get some sleep.”

It was Friday, and we would be leaving for Pine Creek. I loved the place, but this time, I was not so keen on going. I wanted to ask Avery to come with me I was that tragic. I had said I would give her space and she had a presentation to do anyway. I had visited her each evening when we finished shooting though sometimes it was late and all I could do was just share a hot chocolate with her. Avery, Patrick, and Paul had gone on a few drives to see the sights in the day with a private tour company that Callie arranged. She was still limping, but the swelling was starting to go down on her leg.

I had moved in with Jack and had a new wardrobe of clothes. My house had been cleared out, and I would think about a new place when I got back from Ireland. I had not wanted to do the whole gated community thing, but after the fire, I was having second thoughts. Jack lived up the coast. Maybe I would do that. It was just farther to travel to work.

I packed my suitcase and headed to Declan’s to say goodbye. I was officially smitten. I had gone from a single man about town to a one-woman man in a matter of weeks. I liked this new me, and that was saying something.

I had bought a gift for Avery. I hoped she didn’t mind. We sat out on the deck at Declan’s house, sipping iced tea.

“Don’t go out on the town with Patrick too much while I’m away. I don’t want you finding any other guy to whisk you away with his charms.”

“I think you’re safe. We are busy with business meetings after the few days off.”

I brought out the little box and handed it to Avery. She gave me a puzzled look as she raised an eyebrow.

“You didn’t need to buy me anything.”

“I know, but I wanted to. That way you can think of me when you look in the mirror.”

“You are getting so romantic on me, Flynn.”

“Nope. Still a heart of stone, but I try.” Avery opened the box and inhaled. I hoped the gift was having the exact effect I wanted. She held up the necklace. It had a gold heart that had hands clasped around it with a little diamond on the top of the heart.

“It’s a Claddagh necklace. It’s an Irish thing and denotes close friendship.”

“It’s beautiful, but you shouldn’t be spending so much money on me. I haven’t anything to give you.”

“Every time I hear you scream with pleasure you give me more than any money could buy.” I heard the door open, and Callie walked out.

“What did you just say to her, Flynn? She has gone as red as a beet.” Then she looked down and saw the gift. “That’s’ beautiful, Flynn. Maybe you are not such a bad guy after all and the rumors are all lies.”

“I have to go, but call me if you want a chat.” I bent in and whispered in her ear. “Especially a sex chat.”

“We will see,” she said with a grin. A man could only live in hope.

TWENTY-THREE

AVERY

Ipeered in the mirror at the necklace hanging around my neck and smiled. I was officially useless. I had said I would have nothing to do with men after Hunter, and here I was, falling head over heels for Flynn. I wouldn’t tell him that as I was too afraid. Yes, he was being loving, but that did not mean he was in it for the long haul. I should just keep enjoying it while it lasted.
