“I like your way of thinking. I’ve always wanted to go there.”

I yawned as the painkillers started to take effect.

“We will leave you and see you back at Declan’s. Now we will fight our way through the reporters. I need a couple more chocolates to give me sustenance,” Patrick said as he grabbed another two.

I wanted to tell Scarlet what had happened, but I didn’t have a phone so I would need to use the hospital one. My cellphone was still back in my bag at Flynn’s place. I dialed the international number for Scarlet. I didn’t want her worrying about me if she saw it on the news. I had no idea what time it was there. It was ringing.

“Hi,” she answered.

“Scarlet. It’s Avery.”

“Oh my god, are you okay? I saw you’d been in a fire.”

“News travels fast. Yes, I was, and I’m a bit bruised and battered, but I’ll be fine.” I told her about Flynn and Port Douglas. I never kept secrets from her, and the one time I did with Hunter, it had been a disaster. I also told her about the fire and the trip to Ireland.

“You know I love you more than anything. I just want you to take care. This guy seems to have a lot going on in his life. You’ve been through a lot in the past and the media can be crazy.”

“I will.” I didn’t want to give him up no matter what she said.

“We will be here for you no matter what.”

“That means a lot. Could you contact my parents? I don’t want them to worry.”

“I will, and keep me posted.”

Scarlet was right. I had made a decision to not get involved with anyone again and here I was falling headlong into the arms of Flynn Foley. My head was telling me to stop, but my heart and pussy were saying, forge ahead. For now, I was too tired to make a decision and would sleep.

TWENTY-TWO

FLYNN

One part of my life was wonderful with the fact that Avery wanted me. The other half was crap where someone was trying to intimidate or even possibly kill me. She had gotten hurt because of being involved with me. This was crazy. I upset some people but not so they would want to go that far. I had always patched things up with a drink in the past. That or they had never talked to me again. In most cases I was okay with that.

My phone pinged, and it was the police officer again.

“Hi, Flynn. Officer Blankson, here. We looked up the car registration number you gave us, and it came up as stolen. I am still waiting to hear more details from the fire department. It would be good if they could trace where the item thrown into your condo came from.”

“Thank you for trying.” I was still going to go ahead with Declan’s friend Drake and would give him a call tomorrow.

Jack was picking me up from the hotel to go over to my place. It would be dark soon, and I wanted to see if I could find anything out.

He was at reception waiting for me.

“Okay, Flynn. I have calmed down a bit now but let me say this. You are a dick for not telling me what was going on with you two, but that aside, I have your back.”

“That means a lot. Did you bring some flashlights?”

“Yep, they are on the back seat.”

I told him what I knew as we drove to my place. There was a ribbon outside that had cordoned it off. Thankfully, the paparazzi had dispersed though there was a security guard on duty to make sure no one broke in. My car was still in the driveway, and if my keys had not been destroyed, I would take it with me. The stench of smoke filled the air still.

“Hell, this smell is so strong now I can’t believe the two of you got out,” Jack said.

“I think if we had left it any longer, we wouldn’t have.”

I opened the door and looked around. Everything in the main room and kitchen was blackened. The light was still coming in from outside but would soon be gone. I flicked a light switch and it still worked. The smashed window had been covered up with plastic, but there was still glass on the floor. The furniture was ruined, and I could see where the coffee table had fallen over and the broken leg where Avery had hit her knee. I shuddered at what might have been a worse outcome. Had my bad temper led to this?

I walked to the bedroom and pushed open the door. This room wasn’t damaged to the same extent, but the smell was everywhere and black soot on everything. We went back to the main room.
