Then she turned her eyes on me. Damn it, but she had that wicked twinkle there again. She was playing with me, and I loved it. I was getting the distinct impression that Avery was as crazy and wild as Emmy. She was playing with fire though.

“Hi, Avery,” I said, using her real name for the first time. “Welcome to LA.”

“Oh, you have an Irish accent. I was expecting it to be American,” she teased.

“I just have an American accent on the show,” I replied.

“Don’t tell Declan, but I haven’t watched past the first season so I hadn’t seen you.”

I had to try and figure out if she was giving me a clue that she had been clueless about who I was. For a moment I wasn’t sure if she was taking the mickey out of me. I didn’t care. She was close, and I could see Lincoln scowl from across the pool area, so I was happy. It seemed to take him two minutes to be interested in someone else. It was Bec, our makeup artist on the show. I liked her and her crazy motorbiking brother. She would tell Lincoln to take a hike in a minute. I thought for a while something might happen between Bec and myself, but no. We were in the friend zone, but I would take care of any idiots that bothered her. Lincoln turned away and headed toward Sasha. The guy must have a death wish, from her and Jack.

Avery was grinning as she stared across at what was happening.

“Your fellow cast member is not doing too well with the ladies, is he?”

“Lincoln is a great guy.”

“He is and even stopped me falling in the pool.”

“Some people can’t stop you from falling but can rescue you if you do.”

Audrey coughed. “I assume you both can swim so I don’t have to worry about you falling in. I’ll be back in a minute. I just need to talk to someone who wants a commission from me.”

I was under no misapprehension that Audrey was not convinced. The woman should open her own detective agency. Maybe I should get her onto the problems I was having with people sending me strange messages with white powder.

Avery leaned in and whispered.

“My room is the second door on the corridor on the right.” She smiled at me. “I just need to go back to my room and collect my wrap. Perhaps you could help me find it. Corey.”

I wanted to unwrap her inch by inch and feel up those thighs and touch those breasts. I waited for her to go inside and for my throbbing dick to slow. Then I made my move. For once in my life, I had no idea where it would go. I started to walk toward the patio doors, only to be stopped by Declan with one of his twins in his arms.

“So, what did you think of my steak? That sauce is a family secret.”

“It was wonderful. Now I know how you won Callie over.”

“I just need to go inside and change this one’s diaper. I’ll be back and share a beer with you.”

Once Declan scooted inside, and out of sight, I headed in and down the corridor. Avery said the second room. I peered back and made sure no one was watching and knocked. She opened the door, and I snuck in. I felt like a teenager at school that might get caught by the teacher. She shut the door and turned to me. I didn’t want to talk I wanted my mouth on hers. It had been three weeks too long away from those lips.

I moved closer to her, pushing her back against the wall. My body pressed up against hers. I was already hard and wanted to pound her till she screamed. Our faces were so close I could feel her breath on mine. I moved my lips back and forth gently across hers then invaded her mouth. It was like a dream. As before, she opened up to me. Her hands threaded through my hair as I grabbed her hips and lifted her so her legs could wrap around my waist.

Avery groaned as I ground my body against her. If I had any guess, I would have to say that she had missed me as much as I had missed her. I could take her up against the wall or carry her to the bed. I wanted her so much but this wasn’t right. It took all my energy and willpower to stop kissing her, but I did. The two of us were breathless. Our foreheads touched.

“I want to be in you so much it hurts. I can’t do it like this in a friend’s house up against the wall.”

“I agree. I don’t think I could look Declan straight in the face again. So, what’s your plan, Corey? Or should I say, Flynn?”

“I think we both need to talk and without all the well-meaning friends and relatives around here. Give me your number and leave it to me.”

“I think you should leave first, and I’ll come out in a minute.”

The next hour was spent being sociable with everyone and Avery had even managed to drop a note into my hand with her cellphone number on it. When the party died down, I called a taxi. Once I was back in my apartment, I sent her a text.

Flynn: This is a hotel near me. I can book a room now and be waiting for you.

I paced the apartment as I waited for a reply. She had been as keen as me at Declan’s, but what that meant, I had no clue. Was this just a one-off for the sex again. We were like dogs on heat. I didn’t want to think, I just wanted to feel. I hadn’t had much to drink so I would drive to the hotel. Why was I so nervous? I had been involved with more women than I cared to remember. There had been moments I thought things would be more. Was it me? Hell, yes sometimes, but I had let my guard down before and been kicked in the guts.

The relationship with Avery was a masquerade from the beginning. We had pretended to be something else. Corey had been a better me. She wouldn’t want the real one. I would keep it as sex. It was safe. My cellphone pinged.
