Page 5 of Ghostly Glances

"Mark walked up to her, hugged her tight, and said, 'Wendy, that was amazing. I'm so touched you're supportive of my relationship with Emily.' He thought the love song was her way of giving the relationship her blessing!"

Logan burst out laughing, and I joined in, floating a bit higher in my glee. "Yeah, Wendy did not see that coming. Next day, she switched to obsessing over tragic love stories. Figured they were more her speed."

Logan's laughter filled the room, erasing for a moment the boundaries between the living and the dead. "Your stories are ridiculous, Ben. Seriously."

"In a good way, I hope," I said, drifting back to my usual hover.

"In the best way," he agreed, the smile not leaving his face.

Logan's phone buzzed on the coffee table, distracting us both. He glanced at the screen and shook his head. "It's work, asking if I can join a virtual meeting later today. Even when you're sick, they never let you go."

"Ah, the tether of modern employment. You planning on joining the digital circus?"

He chuckled, glancing at me. "I guess I have to at some point. Responsibility and all that."

"While you're contemplating that, how about I entertain you with some parlor tricks?"

His brows shot up. "Parlor tricks? You mean you've got more up your non-existent sleeves than storytelling and flying?"

I grinned. "Oh, you ain't seen nothing yet."

Levitating slightly higher, I focused on the books on a shelf. One by one, they began to float, arranging themselves in mid-air like an invisible librarian was sorting them.

As a finale, I spiraled them around each other, creating a tower of titles. A grin appeared on Logan's face as he watched.

With a dramatic wave of my hand, I sent every book back into its proper spot on the shelf. "Tada! How was that?"

"Mind-blowing," he said, his eyes shining. "How do you do that?"

"Trade secret," I winked. "Let's just say, even in the afterlife, I’m allowed a few mysteries.”

Logan stared at the books, then back at me, a new layer of fascination apparent. "Well, this Halloween season is already way more interesting than I expected."

"Trust me, Logan, we're just getting started.”

He took his phone with him as he headed to the kitchen for more coffee. I heard him typing a message. Probably firing off a text about the "unusual circumstances" he found himself in. The poor guy needed to tell someone, even if they'd think he was nuts.

After he hit “send,” I appeared right beside the fridge, watching the startled expression on his face transform into a reluctant smile. "Ah, so you miss me already?"

He quickly pocketed his phone, rolling his eyes. “It’s more like I’m trying to document the first signs of losing my mind.”

“Getting lost has its merits," I pointed out, floating closer to the kitchen counter. "Keeps life interesting."

Logan hesitated, then decided to bite. "So, you've hinted at some of your ghostly abilities. How exactly do you appear and disappear like you do?”

“Another good question. Are you sure you’re not a reporter?”

“Mild-mannered accountant,” Logan sighed.

“Oh, so you have a little knowledge of the legal system. You are abundantly aware of systems of laws.”

“Afraid so.” Logan sipped his coffee.

“So, gravity, thermodynamics, and the rest of the boring stuff all have laws, but in my life—er, afterlife—there are fewer rules. Basically, it boils down to I'm made of pure energy. Think of it as being WiFi—you can't see it, but it's there. And just like WiFi, I can decide where to 'broadcast' myself within this building. I'm like a hotspot of delightful spookiness."

"That's... surprisingly scientific," he said, looking genuinely interested.

"Don't be too impressed. I can't explain the how; I just know it works. One moment I think of a place, and whoosh, there I am. Like magic but without the wand."
