Fourteen…

I clench and unclench my fists, itching to run my hands over her soft skin.

Fifteen…

Sixteen…

My fingers around her throat while my other hand is between her thighs.

Seventeen…

Her screaming my name.

Eighteen…

Fuck it. That should be enough time.

Rule #4: Don’t trust a word that comes out of my mouth.

Alright, princess. Let’s play.

I exit the fun house, my eyes scanning every inch of my surroundings. She couldn’t have gotten far.

The stench of the carnival wafts toward me, a mixture of sweat and funnel cake. My eyes catch on a glimpse of sun-kissed hair right before it turns a corner.

Got her.

I make my way down the stairs, navigating between all the people milling around. There’s kids yelling for popcorn and cotton candy, couples making sure everyone looks at their blatant displays of affection, teenagers looking to prank others. I tune all of it out, solely focused on hunting Blair.

They’ll all be gone soon enough, and I’ll have my playground all to myself.

I shoulder my way past the food stalls, coming to a stop at the corner I saw her last. The closest place to hide around here is the stable. I slowly make my way over, trying to give it enough time to where she thinks she might have a chance. There’s a petting zoo here, with baby animals for the kids to ooh and aah over. I pick out a kid wearing a baseball cap from the small crowd.

“Hey, kid. You see a woman run through here? Freckles, long hair, pretty?”

“How tall is she?”

What kind of question is that?

“Uh…” I raise my hand right below my chest. “About here?”

The kid shakes his head. I think I may have gotten it wrong, until I hear a small giggle. I whip my head around to see a little girl standing behind me.

“You see her?” I ask.

She giggles again, and I see a few bills crumpled in her fist.

That’s how we’re playing? Dirty cheater.

“How much did she give you?”

“Five bucks,” she answers, holding out her hand to show me.

“I’ll double it.” She points to the far corner of the stable, where a large pile of hay sits. I reach in my pocket, pulling out a ten, and put it in her hand. “Thanks.”

I make my way over to the hay pile, ready to get my hands on Blair. I give it a gentle nudge with my foot. A few seconds pass.

“Blair,” I warn. “If I have to come in there, you’re going to regret it.”
