Julia had been taken. Kristoff Mikhailov had assaulted and tortured her before he, Domino, and the rest of their team could get to her. Julia had then been injured further when Dark Beauty blew up the building with Julia and Domino inside it.

He had failed her that day and was yet to forgive himself for it.

No way was he failing again today.

Not when the life of the woman he loved was hanging in the balance.

“Get down,” he ordered, already pulling out his weapon. They’d been hit in the side, shoving them sideways and into a parked car, which blocked his door. Someone would have already called 911 to report the accident, and they weren’t far from Prey.

Help would be here soon. All he had to do was hold them off until then.

“Christian?” Lila’s terrified voice called his name, and he spared a quick second to toss what he hoped was a reassuring smile at her.

“It’s going to be okay. I won’t let anyone hurt you. You just hold on for me, okay, mama bear?”

“Okay.” Her voice was shaky, but she was holding it together. She’d got down between her seat and the dashboard, curled into a small ball.

Men piled out of the vehicle that had rammed them, and several other black SUVs with tinted windows had pulled up around them as well.

An ambush.

They’d been waiting for him.

Which meant they knew he had left Prey at some point today. The first time he or his team had been out of the building in two weeks.

Coincidence?

No, he didn’t believe in coincidence.

Had they been watching the building or had someone tipped them off?

Was someone at Prey working against them?

Everyone who worked at Prey was thoroughly vetted, but it had happened before, and it could happen again.

Their vehicle was as bulletproof as a vehicle could be, but the men approaching were firing relentlessly at them.

Hurry up and get here, he silently yelled at his team.

A man walked up and stuck something to the front of the car.

A bomb.

Damn.

Thirty seconds.

As soon as they strapped it to his vehicle the men retreated.

They’d left him no choice.

It was either stay here and get blown up or run.

“Lila, get out of the car,” he ordered.

“Did they go?” she asked, not hesitating to do as he asked.

“Just run.” The last thing he needed was for her to panic.
