Steven follows my gaze toward my mom.

"Did you know about this?"

"Yes," I snap at him. "She did. And she approves!"

"But he's--"

"He's what?" I ask, taking a step closer. "He's not you? He's not a doctor? He's just some smalltown teacher? No...he's so much better than you. He's sweet. He's kind. And he would never cheat on me."

"What about me?"

"You're not even in the same league," I tell him, and that's the truth. "I'm sorry, Steven. I really am. But it's over. Everything's over."

Sarah looks between the three of us, my mom still behind me, Steven looking absolutely stunned. Finally, Sarah clears her throat, and we all look over at her.

"Well," Sarah says. "Sounds like she wants you to go, doesn't it?"

Steven glares at us, and we glare back. We're a united front here--the women of Fern Hollow, always at each other's backs. I don't know Sarah, but I can already sense that she could turn into a friend.

Steven raises his hands.

"Fine," he says. "Have it your way. It's fucking over."

"Yeah," I nod, barely able to suppress a victorious smile. "It is."

He stalks past us, and I watch him from the corner of my eye as he leaves the barn and heads toward the front door.

"He's never coming back," my mom says softly. "And you're never going to see him again."

"That's right," I smile, turning my attention back to Sarah. "Now...can you reserve this date for us?"

She grins. "If you insist," she says.

I'm never going to see Steven again, and I know this for a fact.

And I'm just as confident in the fact that I'll be better off for it.

Finn is my future.

And that's what matters.

Chapter fourteen

Finn

Jenny:So I may or may not have told Sarah Hart that we're getting married.

I have to stop myself from swerving off the road when I see the text from Jenny as I drive up to my parents' house for dinner. It's the day of the week when I always go out to their place to meet up with them and Tasha and Chance--and I was going to tell them things might be heating up with Jenny.

But now...well, now Tasha might already know.

Sarah Hart is married to Chance's cousin, and all the girls in the family gossip like crazy. Plus, Fern Hollow is a small town, and word gets around quick.

I wouldn't be surprised if everyone knew.

It makes me nervous as hell.

I grab my phone and tell it to dial Jenny, keeping my eyes on the mountain road. She answers right away, her voice shaking.
