“If you use your noggin, she started off saying her name was Amb—and then stopped and changed to Julie,” Gran retorted, folding her arms and giving me ‘the look.’
I opened my mouth to deny this when the conversation replayed in my mind.
“So she did,” I admitted. “Even so, not interested!”
“How am I going to get great grandbabies if you won’t put out?” Gran demanded.
Harley spat a mouthful of soda straight in my face as he choked. At least Savage had the decency to reach the sink. I groaned as I grabbed a towel and wiped it away, glaring at the younger prospect. Savage gave Harley a resounding whack which helped.
“Gran, I put out when I want. But ain’t taking on a ball and chain. I don’t have to remind you of the last bitch I was serious about,” I growled.
“That was years ago. Now this one is young and pretty and clearly has a good job, as Julie can afford to buy that house. And obviously, Julie’s looking to settle down, as that’s a family home. Before one of your other single brothers gets his hooks in her, strut your stuff and snag her!” Gran demanded.
I rubbed a hand over my eyes. Who the hell would have believed Gran would grow so mouthy as she aged? Yeah, as a kid, she was prone to being blunt and outspoken, but for the last ten years? It was like Satan had claimed her soul and given her the green light to be outrageous.
“Ain’t happening,” I warned her. “And Julie, or whatever her name is, didn’t want to come.”
“She’s just being shy,” Gran said stubbornly.
I barely refrained from rolling my eyes. That would have got me a whack from Gran’s ladle. That fucker had stung my ass more times than I could count. Eyeing Gran, I backed away and made sure my ass was safe.
“Love you, Gran…” I began to say, and she lit up like a Christmas tree.
“I know, boy. I love you too, to the moon and back. And as you love me just as much, do your duty, put out and give me a few babies. Don’t care if you dump the girl after; just give me some grandbabies!”
Harley choked again, and I flinched, but Savage caught the blast. As Harley wiped his face, he sent Gran a baleful look.
“Gonna wade in here, boys?” I growled.
Savage was bitching under his breath as he cleaned up and then poured half his coffee over Harley. Without a word to Gran, Savage then shoved the dripping prospect out the backdoor and began cleaning the floor.
Gran nodded approvingly.
“Well, if you don’t want her, maybe Savage will give me a few babies.”
My chuckle broke free as Savage froze in the middle of wiping the spill and took on a deer-in-the-headlight look.
“No, ma’am, not me. Women ain’t for this guy.”
“Oh, you’re gay! How wonderful! Where is your boyfriend?” Gran exclaimed, and Savage’s jaw dropped open. Harley walked back in as Gran said that and his mouth dropped open before he began sniggering at the look on Savage’s face.
“Um, no, ma’am. I am not gay. I meant I don’t want a relationship either,” Savage said quickly.
“Well, someone’s going to give me grandbabies and pretty damn soon. I’m getting older now. And Julie looked ripe for plucking,” Gran stated and folded her arms. Her glower took in the three of us as Harley backed away with his hands held up.
“Not me, too young,” Harley exclaimed. “Those assholes are old enough to be popping out a baby.”
That damn kid was going to get beaten, I decided as Gran turned her gimlet eye on Savage and me. Brother or not, I was going to beat the shit out of him—once I could get him out of Gran’s protective embrace. Yup, Drake was about to lose a kid. He had plenty more, so he wouldn’t miss Harley much.

How the hell did I end up in these freaking messes? I wondered as I stared at the huge dog ready to eat me. Yup, that was a freaking man-eater! The dog had appeared outside my house and stalked up the path when I’d taken the trash out. It had a creamy white coat with brown eyes and was at least two feet two. The damn thing was gonna swallow me whole, I decided as its jaw opened.
“Layla!” a man bellowed, and Mrs Jepson’s grandson came rushing up the drive.
