“I’d have done it,” Ramirez stated.

“Yeah, but it would have changed you. Lucas needed this more,” I replied, thinking about his changes.

“Chief’s giving him detective. Lucas has more than earned it. When Nando recovers, they’ll partner up,” Ramirez said. His words surprised me.

“Chief’s that confident Nando will wake up?” I questioned.

“Yup.”

“Are you?” Drake asked Ramirez.

“Did you give up on Harley?” Ramirez challenged.

Drake shook his head.

“No.”

“There’s your answer. Thanks for this. It’s given me closure. Make sure those bodies turn up looking like they were executed by Fangs,” Ramirez said.

He left quietly, and moments later, we heard him drive away.

Drake looked around the room. “You know what to do. Do it.”

We all jumped to attention. I grabbed a bottle of bleach and prepared to wipe any evidence of Rage away.

???

When I got home, it was almost midday. Faelea was sitting eating lunch at the kitchen island. Her mouth was going a mile a minute, and I stopped and listened to Amberlea answer her questions. Happily, I watched my girls as I leaned against the door frame, not willing to interrupt them.

Suddenly Amberlea looked up, and a smile crossed her face.

“There you are,” she said, seeing me and heading towards me. She snuggled into my embrace and kissed me.

I loved how bold Amberlea had gotten. It had been obvious at first how inexperienced she had been. But out of respect, I’d never mentioned it and instead encouraged her to try anything and everything she wished. If she did not like something, she’d no compunction about saying so. I’d discovered she didn’t like the paddle, although she did like a gentle flogging. Amberlea certainly liked being spanked and would demand it.

Yeah, she was blossoming under me. And truthfully, I was too. With everything Amberlea and Faelea shoved at me, their love was priceless. Neither of us had said the words yet; Faelea had. And I’d informed her exactly how much I loved her, too. Amberlea was indulgent as we did things that girls did with their fathers. She had not said anything, but I knew that touched her deeply.

I’d spoken to Phoe, and Faelea was enrolled in her school. Amberlea hadn’t complained when I told her I’d done so. Instead, she’d looked grateful. My poor woman had had negative attention for the last decade. My every waking moment was now aimed at giving her lots of love and positive affirmation. I admired how Amberlea was emerging from the prison character she was shaking free from.

My girl loved a good argument and then a ruthless fuck afterwards. Whether it was me or her in charge, Amberlea didn’t care. She loved make-up sex. I think she even instigated some of our fights just to get make-up sex. Amberlea was crafty and cunning, so I wouldn’t put it past her.

Everything in my life was wonderful. Therefore, I shouldn’t have been fuckin’ shocked when it blew up in my face two days later.

Of course it would.

Chapter Eleven.

Gauntlet

“Get to the clubhouse,” Drake ordered me.

I glanced at my phone, wondering what was going on. I’d only left it ten minutes ago after dropping Amberlea off. Faelea had gone on a day trip with some other kids that Phoe had arranged.

“On my way,” I replied, not asking why. Drake didn’t have to give me a reason.

“Gauntlet, make it fast. Some bitch is here claiming to be your sister.” Drake threw me a bone and sent me into a spiral.

“Keep that cunt away from Amberlea,” I growled.
