Axel drew Drake against him and held him tightly.

“Didn’t think I’d get on a bike again,” Axel murmured.

“Weren’t gonna let that happen. Jett and Calamity painted it, Texas, and I did the adjustments. Your leg won’t stop you riding,” Drake said.

“Ellen, get your sweet ass over here, baby,” Axel bellowed, stepping away and heading for the trike. Ellen skipped to him with a huge grin on her face as she clambered into the seat behind Axel. Axel climbed on and winked at everybody as he revved the bike. Then, with a roar, Axel shot out of the car park and into the street. For a while, we all stood there listening to the sound of the pipes fading, and eventually everyone headed back inside.

As the gates closed, I saw a glimpse of what freedom might look like. Just a few more weeks, and it would be mine. Faelea and I would live easily, knowing Cordelia and her wicked family were behind bars. And as for Jax, Arlo, and Mr Cask, when the courts see their letters, written once a month and full of hate, they’d never see Faelea again. Unless she chooses it. I would never stand in her way. Whatever happened going forward would be her choice.

I’ve protected Faelea from her father because I knew I had been set up. If Jax had been true, then I’d have let him take Faelea, but he’d been in too deep with Cordelia and the lies. Faelea would have been brought up a complete brat, or, judging by Cordelia’s conversation, she’d have died as a baby. I shuddered to think of my girl’s beautiful smile not being in the world.

Gauntlet slung an arm around me and drew me close.

“You look thoughtful,” he murmured.

“Just thinking about what is to come. And what real freedom looks like. No more looking over my shoulder, no alias, being able to walk down the road and not feel fear.”

“Things that we all take for granted every day, and you can’t,” Gauntlet said, understanding.

“Yup.”

“Where will you go once they’ve been arrested?” Gauntlet asked.

“I thought I’d stay here.” I gave him a mischievous glance. “There’s a man I like.”

“Nice guy?” Gauntlet played along.

“Yeah, seems to be. I’m hoping we may grow something together,” I teased.

“He might return those feelings too,” Gauntlet said, drew me into an embrace, and kissed me soundly.

Chapter Ten.

Amberlea

I was bouncing on my toes as Gauntlet, Drake, Ace, and Gunner towered over me. We’d followed Detective Ramirez and Benjamin and two uniform cars towards where the Wellsprings lived. Drake informed me that Tonio Ramirez had liaised with the Wellsprings local PD, and they were also going to meet us there. A judge had signed off on the warrants once Tonio had presented him with everything.

A few minutes ago, we had arrived at the mansion the Wellsprings owned, and Tonio rang the doorbell.

I knew from Gauntlet that the Wellsprings, Jax and Cordelia, Arlo and Mr Cask all had breakfast together every Sunday morning. I’d rode behind Gauntlet, who rode behind the others, and we’d parked a little way away from the cop cars. Local police had sent a uniform and a Lieutenant to make sure everything went well. The front door opened, and I hissed as I set eyes on Cordelia for the first time since the accident.

Gauntlet’s arm wrapped around my waist as I staggered slightly, offering silent support. I stared in hatred as Cordelia saw the handsome detectives and swept her hair back. We were close enough that we could hear Tonio as he began speaking.

“Mrs Cordelia Myers?” Tonio asked.

“Yes,” she purred, and a snake stirred in my stomach.

“My name is Detective Ramirez, and this is my partner, Detective Benjamin. Would you mind stepping outside?” Tonio questioned.

Cordelia smirked. Jesus, she was so flaming stupid. With a swish of her hips, she moved several steps and posed.

Tonio pulled some handcuffs from his waist and spun her around.

“Mrs Cordelia Myers, you’re under arrest for…” I listened as Tonio read Cordelia her Miranda rights and the list of the charges being brought against her. The shock wore off as soon as he finished, and Cordelia started shrieking for her father.

A commotion occurred as Tonio handed Cordelia off to a uniformed officer nearby. Mr Wellspring came rushing out with the rest of the family on his heels. Seeing Cordelia in cuffs, he began bellowing.

“Are you Mr Wellspring?” Tonio asked.
