“Bully for you. I bet we’d be able to break in, and you’d not know we were there,” Gauntlet retorted.

Someone snorted, but I didn’t pay them attention. I was determined to hold my own with Mr Hot, Handsome, and Grumpy.

“Oh, no doubt you’ve experience at that!” I snapped.

Gauntlet smirked, and I wanted to smack him across the face.

“You stay here, and you’re surrounded. Always people in the clubhouse. The gates are guarded, and the walls are covered in motion sensors and shit. Ain’t nobody coming over those unseen, and we have security monitored twenty-four/seven. Faelea’s got room to run around, and she can play in the pool. Should they come looking for you, they won’t enter the compound without us knowing. Plus, Faelea can have a birthday party,” Gauntlet stated.

Oh, now that was low. Faelea desperately wanted a party.

“I—”

“Shut it, woman. Trying to do what’s best for you and the kid. You got any sense, you’ll accept Rage’s help and be grateful. I get you got no manners after ten years inside, and you are used to doing shit your way, but listen to reason.” Gauntlet folded his arms and glared at me.

I squared my shoulders and glowered back.

“No manners? How dare you cast a slur on my parents and grandparents! I have impeccable manners! You’re the rude brute. Cutting me off like what I have to say is meaningless. That’s ignorant. I’m an adult and Faelea’s mom. Only I get a right to vote what happens to me and Faelea!” I informed him.

“Fine, go on. Leave, and we’ll wait for the call to rescue your daughter when your ex snatches her because you’ve got such faith in your panic room,” Gauntlet retorted.

“You’re a bastard!” I seethed.

“Proud of it too, honey. Just because I’m showing you what will happen, don’t make me the asshole,” Gauntlet shot back.

“We’ll agree to disagree. Angel, can’t I go into one of your safe houses?” I asked.

Angel had been looking amused until now. I saw Angel glance across the room at Gauntlet, who was standing tense, waiting for Angel’s answer.

“Yeah, but Gauntlet has a point. Here, Faelea can run around and use the facilities. In our safe house, she’ll be locked down all day and night. You and Faelea will have more freedom here, but it’s your choice. A comfy prison or a twenty-four-hour lockdown in a house that won’t be as comfortable as Rage,” Angel said.

Gauntlet looked smug as Angel spoke, and for ten seconds, I wanted to throw Rage’s suggestion in their face. Instead, I swallowed my pride and thought of Faelea. It wouldn’t be fair to her. And honestly, being locked up, even in a house, terrified me.

“Fine, I’ll accept Rage’s kind offer,” I announced, keeping the angst I felt from my voice.

Gauntlet’s smugness increased, and I sent him a dark look. Whatever Gauntlet read in my face made him drop his expression, and concern crossed it instead. Before anyone could say anything, a phone rang, and Drake answered it.

“Thanks,” Drake replied after someone spoke. He rose to his feet. “Get Faelea now. We got cops at the door with her ex.”

“No!” I gasped. From what I’d seen, the compound had no other exit. What were we going to do?

“Ace, keep them at the gate. Gauntlet, get your girls to the panic room.” Drake turned to me. “You’re not the only person with one,” he said as footsteps clattered and Faelea was brought in. She looked scared and worried as she flew across the room to me.

“Come, lovebug, we’re going to hide,” I whispered, and she nodded. Clearly, she had no idea of what was happening, but Faelea wasn’t about to argue. Neither was I, as Gauntlet took my arm and led me down the hallway. To my surprise, a hidden doorway, cleverly concealed, appeared as Gauntlet pushed on a panel, and we slunk inside. Gauntlet came with us and shut the door, and we heard a panel slide back to cover the entrance. We gazed at each other, and for once, I was lost for words.

Chapter Seven.

Amberlea

Faelea clung to me as I stroked her hair and back. Gauntlet was fiddling with a system in the corner, and I watched as he brought up a security camera. Jax and Arlo waited with two uniformed police officers and another man in a suit. They were outside the gate that Gauntlet had ridden through and were waiting for admission to the compound.

“Is that them?” Faelea questioned, separating from me and moving close to Gauntlet.

He shrugged and looked at me.

“Is that who, honey?” I asked.

“Oh, I heard that Jax and Arlo had arrived with the police. No offence? But your friends aren’t very quiet,” Faelea announced, and I laughed at the expression on Gauntlet’s face.
